Mustangs survive Hurricanes
HOUSTON, Texas- Opening day got off to a bang and the game I chose to attend, Hightower at North Shore had me wondering if I should have stayed home and watched Marvel’s Agents of Shield after the opening quarter but the finish showed me several superheroes were right there in front of me and the finish was simply amazing as the Mustangs won 52-47. One thing is for certain, this appears to be yet another season of expect the unexpected which is good for the game, I don’t like is blowouts and the game between GPR area ranked #1 and #4 was definitely close the whole night, neither up by more than five if memory serves correctly.
Jasmine Harvey was definitely a bright spot for Hightower scoring 9 of their 18 halftime points and leading them with 12 while Chelsea Lott proved to be a force on the inside early while Paneby Shirley complimented Lott nicely on the inside and adding 10 points of her own, The talented youth of Hightower will only get better throughout the season, Treazure Mouton definitely is a silent assassin and the addition of Rachel Brown adds even more depth, plus once Taylor Howard gets going and Unique Finley is 100%, this might be your team to beat folks. The X factor will definitely be Madison Glass and if the game had ended 2-0, I would have still been happy to fight the blizzard and watch her hang in the air for what seemed like forever and change hands for a basket, young lady is truly explosive
Actually it wasn’t a blizzard, and North Shore definitely wasn’t being blown out at any point, that’s an inside joke but let me say this, the dynamic duo of Chasity Patterson and Adriiana Jackson did what they needed to do, put their teams on their backs when they needed to. This game was only 6-4 after one with North Shore up and the halftime score, 18-14 Hightower, is what I expected the first quarter to be but maybe the hype by not only me but the other media outlets had something to do with that, no I’m just kidding, turnovers and missed free throws from both teams made the opening half ugly to watch but that heated up after both teams had their halftime talks with their respective coaches. The Mustang duo then went to work, both ending up with 16 and Jackson was simply clutch down the stretch from the line.
Kayla Mack came up with rebounds and steals throughout the game but the biggest steal came from Tiffany Arceneaux to seal the victory. When you look at Tre Norris and Alyssa Okene both making key plays, Shae Jackson and Madison Francis energy off the bench and this without Deja Hughes who will be back any day, I’ll truly be excited to see North Shore Friday night against Barbers Hill and the winner more than likely playing Cy Woods on Saturday, the big question is will my top three remain the same.I’ll try and adjust my area Top 20 weekly up until the end of the season and then bi-weekly or monthly afterwards but the tests are going to be coming for many squads during these tournaments that are about to start. It should also give me a clear picture on who the top teams are because the game is played on the court folks.
