Mississippi Lady Hawks flying high

The Mississippi Lady Hawks brought a couple of teams down to the BigTyme Fall Finish and both teams had some players and I mean players. In the opening game on Sunday, the Lady Hawks 17u team went against a tough DFW North team from Oklahoma and that proved to be one of the most exciting games in the tournament as the Hawks simply came out on fire and jumped to a commanding double digit lead. There are two halves in basketball, except the games I play in, and DFW came back for the victory but like the dozens of college coaches there to witness the talent, I don’t care about wins and losses, I’m looking for players that can play at the next level and the Lady Hawks definitely have some. 2013 Raven Thompson was explosive from the wing and at 5’10 played even taller. Ashley Beals (2013) controlled the inside along with 6’1 Kierra Jordan and Brittany Jones, both from the 2013 class while Andrea Fleming (2014) was strong on both ends of the court throughout the tournament.

Even more impressive was the guard play and the way they brought the heat. Lasha Haynes (2014) and Jamilah Sanders (2014) teamed with Morgan Catchings (2014) to put pressure on opposing guards throughout the tournament causing numerous turnovers. Although they were not as seasoned as the 17u team, the 2014 squad showed promise and have several players with a lot of potential. 2016 Elexis Peyton showed me she could score on a variety of ways including taking me way back to what helped get Kareem in the Hall of Fame, a sky hook. Well maybe it was a jump hook but still she shot it like she knew what she was doing. Speaking of knowing what they were doing, 2015 Chelsea Causey played like one of those throwback players I love seeing as she battled for every ball on both ends and at 5’9 she showed that hard work and effort can take you a very long way. Kawaii Perry and Caprice Coleman joined Perry with dual duty on both teams and providing some good minutes along the way Coach Elliot Robinson brought some talented players from Mississippi to participate in the Fall Finish and as a whole, they had a great showing
