Hill Can’t Get To Summit

ASHLEY ELI

This game started off with a lot of energy and speed and almost halfway through the first quarter Barbers Hill led Mansfield Summit 1-0. To be honest with you, this was one of the best low scoring games I have ever seen, simply because of the intensity provided by both teams not to mention the defense as they were a combined 0/12 to start the game. Summit’s unsung hero Jazzmin Jackson scored the first field goal of the game and Kendall Shaw scored the Eagles first field goal with under a minute remaining, she also added three free throws but Summit was up 7-6 at the end of the first quarter following a Maya Hawkins steal and assist . Not a great shooting night for either team, Barbers Hill was only 1/11 in the first quarter but the game stayed entertaining. Jackson opened the second quarter with a bucket then Ashley Eli was the recipient of another steal and assist from Hawkins as it appeared Summit might be on the verge of pulling away. A three by the Eagles Mackenzie May thwarted the run and a Shannon Evans drive gave the Eagles a 16-15 lead. Shaw received two fouls in the first half and sat for almost the final three minutes but Eli was in a zone scoring 10 points in the first half as Summit led 19-18

JAZZMIN JACKSON

To say this was a game of runs would be an understatement as the Eagles came out on fire with an 8-0 run to open the third before a Hawkins bucket highlighted by freshman Kimi Carter’s drive to the basket. That run happened in the first 2:35 seconds but the problem is they didn’t score again in the quarter while Summit finished on a 15-0 run of their own. Normally a good three point shooting team, the Eagles had trouble this game going only 1/8 as they headed into the final quarter down 34-26. Shaw scored 8 of the Eagles first 11 points as they took the lead 37-36 but Jackson’s and one with just over two minutes sealed the victory as the Eagles wouldn’t score again, losing 40-37. Shaw finished with a double-double, 13 points and 13 rebounds while Summit’s Eli scored 13 points and Jackson added a double-double of her own with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Jaguars will play the Rockwall Yellowjackets, who defeated Victoria East 48-35, in the 4A Championship on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
