Cy Falls Eagles Get It Done
After watching yet another slow start in a game this season, Cy Falls opened up an impressive run in the opening quarter for reminiscent of last season’s “Bomb Squad” as the threes were falling, two from Shernice Robertson and another from Sedalia Ellis but even more important was the fact that Carol Willie was finishing on the inside. The highlight had to be an Ellis move where she crossed a defender and in one motion put the ball between her legs for a bucket and it appears the Eagles were ready to fly leading 21-9
As so many teams have found out this season, Elsik isn’t one to lie down and give up in crunch time as Crystal Porter scored her first points followed by a Gabby Ocanas three which pulled the Rams within seven. Cy Falls didn’t even score for almost 3 minutes however they were winning the battle on the boards and after Erin Caldwell scored, they went on yet another run, increasing the lead to 30-16, even though Kit Metoyer went out with an eye injury. Elsik however had something up their sleeves as Jasmine Ocanas joined younger sister Gabby at dropping threes to ignite another rally cutting the lead down to six, 30-24. Fortunately for the Eagles, Loryn Goodwin was getting it done at both ends as I like calling her a double-double waiting to happen and her five points were almost half of the 12 they scored in the period. Akunna Elonu scored six points for the Rams in the second quarter including a put back at the buzzer cutting the lead to five 33-28
Elsik is one of the most unselfish teams I’ve ever seen and this has a lot to do with their success as Porter finally started heating up and even though she picked up her third foul, she helped bring the Rams within three but they ended the quarter down 47-43. Both teams scored quickly and the highlights had to be something I hate seeing. First a tech was called on a Cy Falls player, I saw the same thing happen against Elsik when they played Bellaire however that called was reversed, this one was not. The next call that simply had me in a daze was the one that fouled out Jasmine Ocanas and we all know the game starts at the one, this was at the 3:35 mark and Elsik down 53-50.
To say this cost Elsik the game wouldn’t be a correct statement because the Rams missed numerous opportunities that they just didn’t capitalize on, that’s the bottom line. Even with Ocanas on the bench and visibly shaken, Elonu hit two free throws to close the gap again 55-52. Then an Elsik steal on the inbounds pass which they immediately turned over not once but twice as it appeared the Eagles were on the verge of giving this one away, Carol Willie knocked down two free throws and the Eagles win 59-52 joining the Barbers Hill Eagles and Dekaney Wildcats as area teams heading to Austin.
