Sandra Meadows Champions
The Sandra Meadows Classic once again gave a true basketball fan everything they needed to see. Whatever you wanted was there, great teams, gifted players or enough excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat, you had a chance to witness up close and personal. The Duncanville Pantherettes defeated the only team they had lost to, Plano West, in the finals and when the new rankings come out, if they are any lower than No. 2, I would be astounded, well maybe not based on how these polls go. I haven’t seen defending State Champion Irving MacArthur but I know that Alexis Jones hasn’t graduated and no one in Texas has beaten them so they’re not moving from the top spot. Whatever team that comes out of Region 1 this season probably will be the favorites to win it all but to be honest after watching Duncanville win the Texas Invitational and now Sandra Meadows, they are the best team I’ve seen this season. These young ladies come out of the gates running and applying pressure and when you have this type of intensity off the top from teams that can keep it up throughout the game, it’s going to be hard to beat them. In route to winning the championship, they knocked off the No.2 team from 3A, Kennedale, the best team from Louisiana, St. Thomas More and of course avenging an earlier defeat to No.7 Plano West 55-38
Empress Davenport continues to impress me and I can’t wait to watch her play at the University of Texas, in fact she’s Big 12 ready right now and believe me she knows it. It’s always refreshing to see great players buy into the team concept and getting hers in the flow. She didn’t lead the team in scoring every game however she did average over 16 ppg for the tournament but her presence on the court is worth double digit points without attempting a shot and her being named MVP of the tourney reflects just that. Tasia Foreman and Morgan Bolton were also named to the all-tournament team while Kia Perry was named Outstanding Defensive Player.
There will be more to come from the Sandra Meadows Classic and Mansfield Tournament on the BLOG
