Changing Of The Guards

Meighan Simmons was ranked in the Top 10 for the Class of 2010  by various scouting services at one point or another during her career at Cibola High School in Cibola,Texas, which is on the outskirts of San Antonio. After an illustrious high school career, Simmons picked up where she left off at Tennessee and quickly became an offensive weapon for the Vols. Many were wondering if this was an anomaly, after all, there have been some really good guards from that area but guards like this weren’t known for coming out or around San Antonio, until now. 

Mckenzie Calvert, above, is about to enter her sophomore year at Steele High Scool in Schertz, Texas but prior to entering Steele, she gave her commitment to Baylor University which caught many by surprise because of her youth. Evidently those people hadn’t seen her play and with her never say quit attitude along with her college ready body, it was a perfect fit and her talent is not to be questioned.

Recee Caldwell decided on Baylor prior to her sophomore year at Johnson High School and the young lady I tabbed as one of my “can’t misses” while she was in the 7th grade certainly hasn’t missed as of yet. Not only making but also being the youngest player on the USA U16 National Team over the summer, Caldwell showed whatever she lacked here or there, she made up for it with her knowledge of the game. She’s on everyone’s Top 10 list and with her work ethic, I don’t see that changing.

Kyra Lambert, above, is about to enter her freshman season at another Steele High School, this one is in Cibola and her game is already ahead of her years. Caldwell’s dad, Ray, told me I might want to keep an eye on this 7th grader at one of the Ganon Baker Camp’s I covered and I have been following her ever since. She has the package and you’ll be hearing great things about this young lady. Is this the end of the line for high powered San Antonio guards?

Hardly and when you get a chance to see Amber Ramirez handle the ball, you will be amazed at the things she can do even though she’s only an 8th grader. I’ll also be keeping a close eye on Recee’s younger sister, 6th grader Desiree who played up with the big girl’s and handled herself quite well. For more on Amber and Desiree, check out the BLOG
