Victorian Helps Lions Seal Victory
Elsik has dominated 18-5A over the past three seasons; in fact they haven’t lost a district game during that time. The second best team in the district, Alief Taylor, traveled to Eisenhower and came away with a win, 70-63, led by Jazymne Victorian’s 27 points . Taylor jumped out to a 19-16 lead after the first quarter, but the Eagles 6-0 run to start the second quarter made everyone aware that they were not going to lie down for one minute. Taylor was in the bonus most of the second quarter and after Ike’s Kendricka Osborne split the defense for a layup, Taylor Swayzer dropped a three pointer to tie the game at 26, Swayzer finished with 21 points. Taylor went into halftime up 40-34 after a layup at the buzzer by Victorian on an assist from Jameca Byrd.
Ashley Charles was the offensive force for Ike and kept them close for the most part in the first half, she finished with 20 points. Courtney Moore was all over the place as usual, blocking shots, starting and also finishing many fast breaks on the evening, and on her final block, which she also saved from going out of bounds, drove coast to coast and assisted to Taylor Overshown on a play that cut the lead down to four, 62-58. Victorian wanted the ball in her hands the rest of the game and the senior knew Ike would have to foul for any chance to win. She was ice at the line down the stretch, knocking down six free throws in the final two minutes.
Osborne was very impressive for Ike and she scored her 13 points on a variety of shots. Overshown’s shot was off tonight, but she can be electrifying on the court. The bottom line is both teams have the personnel and ability to pull off some upsets, so don’t be surprised.
