Cy Woods Moves On
The stage has been set. Cy Woods will travel to Cy Falls on Tuesday to determine the district championship after defeating Cy Creek by a score of 56-47. This was my first look at Cy Woods this season, I already knew about Nicholls State signee Jennifer Nash who scored 17 points and is one of the top long range shooters in the city, Chelsi Grimes, the “5’0” point guard that brings energy and excitement to the team and Justin Crisp, the sixth man who is known for instant offense.
I didn’t know about Audrey Garcia who kept the team within striking distance in the first quarter and by my notes finished with 12 points and hadn’t seen Olivia Ogwumike, yes Nneka and Chiney’s younger sister, who is very raw but determined and finished with 9 points including clutch free throws down the stretch. The X factor may be Camille Williams, a Langham Creek transfer who just moved up to varsity and brought in a much needed offensive boost off the bench as she also finished with 9.
The game went back and forth in the first half before Woods started the third quarter with a 7-2 run and never lost the lead. Angelica Weaver was high scorer for the Cougars with 12 points and was all over the place for Cy Creek. Maddy McGlamery made it interesting as she scored a field gaol to cut the lead down to one, 42-41, but four Nash free throws and a jumper by Grimes sealed the victory. Mc Glammery finished with 9, as well as Caitlin Beale. Cy Creek hosts Cy Ranch on Tuesday and have a one game lead on them for the final playoff spot.
