The season of anything can happen and has keeps on track as the New Year of Houston area basketball starts. In a 19 5A showdown between the last two unbeaten teams in that district, Katy Taylor traveled to Memorial for a battle between the Mustangs and Memorial came out on top 53-50. The game started out like the weather, sloppy, as Memorial jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held Taylor scoreless the first half of the quarter. An Amanda Jungwirth coast to coast lay-up cut the lead down 7-4, however Memorial’s Ellen Anderson scored her team’s final 5 points as Memorial lead 14-6 after one. Anderson and Jungwirth continued to spark their teams in the second quarter, an Anderson three gave Memorial a 10 point lead before and and one by Jungwirth cut it back to seven, but a Madison Miller jumper and another field goal closed out the half with Memorial up 24-16. Anderson leads the scoring for Memorial with 11, while Jungswirth lead Taylor with 8.

The second half started with back to back threes by Jada Roberts, a put back and two free throws by Amyra Jenkins and then another put back by Logan Johnson and the game was tied at 28. Taylor took their first lead a couple of possessions later and appeared to have the momentum on their side, however baskets from Olivia Podaras and and a runner by Laurel Carrell swung it back to the home team and Memorial led 41-34 with one quarter remaining. Jungwirth went to work in the final quarter, the kid has amazing body control and after several Memorial turnovers and lay-ups by Kendall Covington and Jungswirth, this game was tied at 45 and went into overtime 47 all. An  Anderson three along with her two free throws were too much for Taylor as Memorial hangs on to win along with having sole possession of first place in district. Jungwirth lead all scorers with  22 points, while Roberts added 10 for Taylor. Anderson was high scorer for Memorial with 19 points,  followed by Kelly Wilson’s 10.
