Eagles ready to soar to San Antonio
KRISTINA KANA
The Tre’ was the place to be for basketball on Sunday as three pointers were dropping from everywhere at the Greater Houston Invitational. At the end of the day, the two best teams in the event, North Shore and Barbers Hill, found themselves in the championship and the Mustangs won by, what else, three. I’ve adjusted my rankings and although they may not look like other rankings you’ve seen area teams in but I actually put a little thought into what I do, especially among the top squads and glancing at the UIL alignment, I truly don’t see a team stop Barbers Hill, providing they stay healthy, from getting out of here. Kimberly Carter has been on a tear the past couple of months, she’s finishing strong with either hand and also shooting the long ball exceptionally well but she isn’t by herself.
LEAH SILVA
Leah Silva didn’t play in the GHI which makes what they did against North Shore even more impressive as she is a more than capable scorer but in order to make runs, you need as much firepower as you can handle and Kristina Kana was definitely on fire as she scored from everywhere and I mean everywhere not to mention also doing an adequate job on the boards. Another two things you always need to make runs are game changers and pressure players and Jakaila Phillips definitely can change the tempo. She’s a super athlete that can score and she also was stroking the long ball well. I mentioned pressure, well the other Leah (Beall) did play and she hit some huge buckets but none as huge as taking the ball the length of the court and pulling for the three to cut the lead to three in the final 10 seconds. I’ve given you reasons why they will make a run, here’s why the run will be deep, Tip Sheet Charli has simply gone berserk.
“TIP SHEET CHARLI” COLLIER
I’ve ranted and raved about this young lady since she was in the 5th grade and since she has four seasons before suiting up for the Longhorns, Charli Collier continues to show others how her game continues to evolve. She’s 6’4 and already has a college ready body plus she’s strong in the paint which why I say she’s #HookEm ready and she is, right now she could create some issues and that’s simply because she gets up for the challenge. She can’t handle ball, well I saw her go coast to coast last season numerous times and dropped a crossover that has me dizzy thinking about it. She can’t shoot the midrange, well she showed that was a lie as she not only shot it well this past season, she also improved her free throw percentage and yesterday, I’m thinking “No Charli no” as she launched a three down the stretch and as is it swished I hollered “Yes Charli yes!!!!” but her dominance in the paint is simply amazing. Now that she’s adding both the turnaround and jump hook, well mastering, I truly believe this team will be in San Antonio come March
