JAZZY OWENS-BARNETT

IRVING, TEXAS- This is a new era in girls’ basketball and parents have so much thrown at them that they just don’t know what to believe and like anything else in life, if it sounds too good, well it probably isn’t. This is why I’m somewhat guarded on events I cover and people that I deal with because for the most part, much of this is about everything but the kids and I’ll always keep it real simply because that’s my nature and I fear no repercussions because that too is my nature. PassThaBall has done a magnificent job at helping bring legitimacy to girls basketball and promoting it the proper way which is why I always enjoy evaluating the talented players that are on hand to showcase their skills and as far as talent goes, this was one of the most loaded HoopAHolics events and had several legitimate college prospects as well as many on the verge. I picked 20 plus players for the Tip Sheet but when I cover an event like this, I try and evaluate each player so with that being said, if you don’t follow me on social media, you might miss something but here’s part one of my coverage and you can recapture video highlights by clicking here

2022

Jasmyn Brock -5’10 guard ( Next Level Raiders) strong body, doesn’t mind physicality on either ends but showed she could not only finish strong but has range and to top all of that off, her floater looks pretty good

Kiersten Johnson-6’1 post (Pro Skills) long and athletic always grabs my attention and watching Johnson block or alter numerous shots from all over the court had me in tune but when she grabbed a rebound and took it coast to coast for a basket, I just shook my head. Nice inside moves, good hands and footwork, definitely will draw attention

Jakayla Thompson-5’5 guard (AD Elite) attacks basket whenever she feels like it and finishes strong but added pluses are she can handle the ball, under pressure and does a good job seeing the floor. Showed she could hit the midrange with ease and consistently

Jazzy Owens-Barnett- 5’6 guard ( Pro Skills) I speak about the “it” factor sometimes and to sum it up, it means a multitude of things, all good, that a player possesses and watching Jazzy’s explosiveness at this stage of her career combined with being a nightmare to defend as she scores so many ways will take her far

Jerrika Mahonn-5’6 guard (Team Pink) runs the one efficiently and by that I mean she not only handles the ball well under pressure, she makes the right passes to the right players and her ability to see the floor, along with creating her shot and finishing it are huge. Love the hesitation and stutter step to keep em guessing

Jordyn Marshall-5-4 guard ( AD Elite) first step is devastating and her explosiveness at this stage is way ahead of the game. Nice pull-up jumper as well as stop and pop on a dime and to add even more, she will bring heat on defense

Amari Rodgers- 5’11 post- love her size but even more so the way she uses it. She rebounds well on both ends and she finishes strong, with players hanging on her at that and she showed she could defend on perimeter. Good upside

K J Walker-5’5 PG (Texas Elite Topping) very athletic player that has ability to get by defenders, good ball handling skills and showed she could run a team. Also does good job of mixing it up on offense, attacking from all angles or shooting from outside

Kylee Hunt-5’3 guard- one of many talented out of state players, Kylee showed she was definitely “in the Hunt”  during the event. It’s important to be able to create your shot, she does that well and nails it plus she can defenders off the dribble effortlessly

Alisa Williams-5’10 forward- good size and athleticism now tells me a lot with some of her intangibles she already has. Attacks the basket and finishes with contact but she also can handle the ball and see the floor at her size, not to mention defend and rebound

Rachel Coleman-5’7 forward (Houston Elite) definitely opened my eyes during club season but they’re wide open now as she’s added even more to her game. Good body finishes strong and attacks the basket. Faces the basket and nails mid to long range and rebounds on both ends

Kaliyah Phillips-5’5 guard (AD Elite) showed she had athleticism early at camp but her effort was something that can’t be taught. She rebounds extremely well for her size and she goes after everything, definitely a battler on both ends. Also attacks basket and finishes strong

Akyshia Cottrell-5’6 guard- some things you just can’t teach. I may have said that before but it’s true and Cottrell’s speed is uncanny as she blows by defenders, plays passing lane and defends on both ends. Also creates her own shot under pressure

Aliyah Collins- 5’3 PG (Brazos Valley Elite) one of those players that sold me the first time I saw her and you better turn up the heat on defense with this AC. She can score almost every way imaginable right now, she plays the same no matter what and she is nowhere near the finished product

Aaliyah Holmes- 5’8 guard (Team Xpress) pretty god combination of being both a scorer and a shooter and that’s always an advantage as she finds ways to the ball in the basket. Good size and strong body is a definite advantage and when she showed she could catch and shoot the long ball…..

Madison Cockrell-5’3 PG ( Pro Skills) don’t know if she can rap but this MC has dropped the mic several times in the span of a few months. Fearless s a good word as she dives for loose balls, takes charges, attacks and hangs in the air finishing with contact and has range from all over the court

Modesti McConnell-5’7 PG (Oklahoma Lady Fire) speedy ball handler or handles ball under with speed under pressure, she blows by defenders and slices her way to the basket and finishes. On top of that, she rebounds well

Nya Threatt- 5’3 PG ( AD Elite) plays bigger than size and I’m talking on both ends. She sold me a long time ago on offense, she can flat out shoot it from all around the court but her defense is definitely on the up and up, as well as her potential because she brings so much to the table

Breanna Davis-5’7 guard (Pro Skills) can hear sold me the first time again cause she certainly did while leaving me somewhat speechless. The cool thing is she wants to keep getting better and she’s showing that each time I catch her. Scores, defends and just brings it

Desiree Wooten- 5’6 PG- okay she’s athletic, plus defends and rebounds from the point position but she’s also fast, with the ball and that is huge, especially when she can handle it under pressure and see the floor going full speed. Oh yeah, attacks and finishes strong

Deucee Reed- 5’3 PG ( North Texas Shockers) prototype point guard, pass first mentality and loves to set teammates up for easy baskets. Knows the game well and plays within herself, good ball handler, under pressure and scores if she needs to

Elisabeth Roach- 5’7 guard (Texas Elite Topping) athletic guard that pushes the ball well and also attacks the rim at will. Finishes strong and rebounds well from the guard position, not to mention defends strong baseline to baseline. Good upside

Kayla Cooper-5’5 PG ( Cy Fair Shooters) okay repeat after me, Kayla Cooper is a HOOPA and her ability to mix it up was definitely on point, pun intended. She has the mindset to put the ball in the basket, floater, step back, mid to long range, but she also sees the floor and can set teammates up

SAMANTHA WAGNER

2023

Azjah Reeves-5’6 PG ( Lady Fire) love point guards that see the floor well, there were plenty on hand and Reeves was one of them. Handles the ball and finishes well, good explosiveness off the dribble, good upside

Destiny Jones- 5’7 forward (Pro Skills) one of those players that is an “and one” waiting to happen. Uncanny knack of getting to the rim and creating contact at her age is special but finishing over and over taking hard licks is even more special

Samantha Wagner-6’0 forward ( SA Finest) I called this young lady a BCS lock the first time I saw her drop the long ball numerous times a few months ago but that wasn’t the only reason. She’s getting to the rim and finishing stronger, ball handling and rebounding have improved as well as defense and that 72 inches doesn’t hurt
