WAC Division Tip Sheet -Border War 2021
The talent continued to heat up at Border War 2021 and again I was scrambling to see as many players as I could possibly see so if a team didn’t have a roster or number associated with players I probably missed them because again, I’m trying to see as much as possible so here are some of the standouts, I’m a visual person so I’ll be going back to look through the 1000 plus pictures I took and will be dropping on my various social media accounts, all under what else, GIRLZPREPREPORT
Misora Nambara (Showtime 2024) I immediately was taken away by her poise under pressure plus she did a very good job of not only handling the ball while being tightly defended, but she also created her shot to take defenders or drop the mid to long-range. Add to that ” she sees the floor very well” and has quick hands
London Webb-5’9 C (Arkansas Angels 2024) what really grabs at me with players is when they show me #THROWBACK stuff, these are things I put into the “can’t be taught” category, and DESIRE is one of them and she showed so much of that going after the ball off the rim, wherever it bounced. She also had some nice putbacks and her upside is very good
Jennifer Hartman-5’11 (Arkansas Select 2024) I say all of the time that I love seeing big guards that can shoot yet I add, college coaches also love it and they’re giving “the ships” yet her ship is going to be sailing higher with not only her ability to create and knock down the mid to long-range, she can drop the long ball from deep, NBA range
Lauren Luebbert (DC Queens 2024) using my keen sense of observation, she’s around 5’9 yet I am guessing on her height but I ain’t guessing on her game and just watching her handle the ball in traffic and make the right pass to the right teammate over and over was pretty good yet when you add that she has very good range, that will keep the defense honest
Donyia Hall-5’11 PF (Heroes 15U) her upside is intriguing, she has the frame, the hands and footwork so the base is definitely there and after seeing her do two things, finish multiple times with players literally hanging on her back and rebounding with authority spoke volumes yet it got louder as she ran the floor and stepped outside of the paint to defend
Hayden Smodgrass-5’8 G (Kansas United 2024) I can only imagine what’s coming, she has the HEZ, the crossover, the stutter-step all down pat, and watching her create her shot with ease, then elevate in one motion spoke volumes. She has unlimited range, the mid is pretty impressive right now yet her pull-up jumper in half-court or stop and pop in the open court is next level ready
Brenna Ward-5’10 (MO PHENOM 14U Sutton) she’s long and athletic, that’s the base I use when I profile certain players because I’m thinking what else can the add, well her ability to play the passing lane and handle the ball in the open court led to baskets and that same ballhandling allows her to attack off the dribble but she has good timing, she rebounds and defends
Kori Alcorn-5’8 G (M) Phenom 15U Jackson) several guards showed me time and time again that they could shoot the long ball and Alcorn was one of them because every time I passed her court, I saw 23 dropping a 3 so I HAD TO FIND OUT her name. She creates her shot, yes under pressure ad she shoots in with confidence and wants in down the stretch, well she stretches the defense too
Elsie Larson-5’6 G (MO PHENOM 15U Porter) I love watching heady players that play within themselves yet at the blink of an eye can take a game over and her first step sets it off as she blows by defenders to attack and finish or dish it off for an assist yet she understands two things which are vital, how to control the tempo, when to push and when to set up
McKenzie Mathurin-5’9 CG (Swift 2024) me calling her a #BCSLock after she has BCS offers doesn’t make me a genius, understanding why she is does and I spoke about her POISE a few months ago and taking PUNISHMENT because that’s what college ball is going to bring and her enduring it now yet continuously coming back to drop jumpers or score anyway you can imagine sums it up but she is also UNSELFISH, that’s BIG
Jordan Marshall-5’11 CG (Team Elite 2024) her size and college ready body set the stage yet what turned on the lights was her jumper, she creates it well, her form and release is nice and she nails it consistently from mid to long-range yet she also takes defenders off the dribble and finishes after the lick. She rebounds on both ends, handles the ball in the open court, and defends
Via Johnson- G (Shock 2024) tons of talent throughout this organization that I’m doing a combo on the squads yet her 1-2 combination of playing the passing lane and dropping the long ball had me smiling. Her energy level plays the same and her defense created turnovers which led to baskets yet she also did a good job of seeing the floor
Keyona Hall-5’8 G (Gameball 2024) let me open with she’s athletic and she understands how and when to attack but I loved the heat she brought on defense as much as seeing her fight for positioning and outrebound taller opponents. She also does a good job of creating her shot and the pull-up jumper was consistently dropping
Kyla Herkfens-5’9 G (Wheat State Nicholson 2024) another guard that could create her shot and shoot the ball well yet she showed me she could also set the defender up with a deceptive first step, attack the basket, and finish with contact. She rebounded on both ends, she played solid defense not only in the half court but baseline to baseline as well
Brooklyn Gormley-6’1 (Wheat State Stewart 2024) she stands above “the magic number” which is 6’0 and she’s “long and athletic” that’s the base, so to say she will play at the next level is an understatement and how high she flies is in her hands yet let me say this, her upside is very, very good, she’s fluid, she has pretty good timing to block, deflect and alter shots, she rebounds well ad she can finish
