TOWER TOO HIGH FOR WC IN SANDRA MEADOWS
The Sandra Meadows Classic is regarded as one of the top tournaments in Texas. With the success of teams from Houston over the past five years, Westside and Bellaire have both won the tournament, it was only fitting the championship would come down to last season’s 5A State Finalist Runner-up, Hightower, and the top ranked Texas team in the country, Westbury Christian. Both teams had to fight in the Final Four to make it to the finals, Hightower defeated a pesky Plano West team 45-42, while Westbury Christian held off another previous winner, Fayetteville AR. 47-43, right after defeating defending champ and hometown favorite Duncanville in the quarterfinals.
Hightower jumped out to a 16-9 lead against Westbury Christian after the first quarter ended, Jasmine Prophet was simply unstoppable scoring half of the Hurricanes points. The Wildcats won the second quarter 19-13 as Fallon Ellis and Sylvana Okde combined for 13 points, but Raven Lane’s 6 points had the Canes going into the half still leading 29-28. Hightower stretched the lead back up in the third quarter as the Gilbert twins, Taylor and Tyler went to work and wound up winning going away 64-49. Hightower is one of the top teams in the area and state has a chance to make it back to Austin, beating a team ranked as high as Westbury Christian will give them plenty of momentum as district races are about to get hot and heavy across the state. Raven Lane looked extremely well coming off last season’s knee injury and for her efforts, she was named Tournament MVP.
