Sharpshooters help Mustangs hold off Eagles

Ranch Rivera vs Ike

Earlier in the season, I wrote about District 17 being the toughest in Region 3 and that statement proved to be correct as all four teams won their opening round games. At the Campbell Center, I saw Cy Ranch defeat Eisenhower and Cy Creek defeat Nimitz while over at Mayde Creek Cy Falls and Cy Woods were taking care of Elsik and Hastings respectively.

In game one of the doubleheader, I found out Kara Cezar would be out for Cy Ranch because of a concussion she suffered on the final game of the season at least another week which added yet another player to the Mustang list of non-available as Sydney Coleman and Ashley O’Block are done for the season. To the top that off Eisenhower’s starting point guard Sahqueria Debose sprained her ankle during pregame warm-ups and we all know where the game starts at, the one.

Cienna Rivera showed just how important that statement is as she got her team going early with two threes in the opening period however Ike just wouldn’t quit and after watching them multiple times, I thought they had a good chance to win the opening round game. Ashylyn Wiemann opened the third with a three, her first of two in that period, Kristen Kech had two threes in the game and Meia Rachel and Sabryyah Fennel did all the little things you may not see in the box score that contributed to their 42-32 victory

I know I said 17 is the toughest district, it is, however Eisenhower has some very talented players you may not know about unless you follow what I write and Sonerka White showed everyone in the Campbell Center exactly what I’ve been writing about as she and Jonisia Jackson kept them in the game which was 36-32 after three. The bad news is Ike couldn’t score in the final period while the Mustangs scored only six in their 42-32 victory. Rivera finished with 10 for the Mustangs while White and Jackson dropped 16 and 10 respectively

Eisenhower has their core group coming back next season along with some talented players that will move up to varsity, here’s another gift, Tiffany Randle and don’t be surprised if they pull off some surprises and of course, I’ll be right here to say I told you so. The Mustangs escaped with a win, more than likely they will face Bellaire in round 2 as the Cardinals have Memorial tonight but the game is played on the court
