Seven Lakes stops Cy Woods in overtime
Seven Lakes has overcome many obstacles from injuries to key players since I called them a sleeper team a couple of seasons however after advancing to their first area F-4 after defeating Cy Woods 61-51, the Spartans have not only shown that they have not only the will to win, but the desire to finish what was started when Christen Inman and Sydney Buchel arrived as freshmen.
Inman was simply amazing the whole game and after Cy Woods jumped out to a 13-10 lead after one, Inman had scored six of the Spartans 10 points. Erica and Olivia Ogwumike were on fire early scoring four each in the opening quarter. Woods also received a big boost from Tyler Davis in the second quarter as she was everywhere on both ends of the floor and her eight points were huge because Seven Lakes took the lead going into the half 25-23, the Spartans receiving a boost of their own from Ally Barrios who had eight as well at the hal. Inman increased her point total to 13 as she appeared to be in “the zone”
I had a chance to speak with Brittany Bigott’s dad during halftime and assured me if “Double B” was left open in the second half, she would connect from long range and if ever something someone told me was was prophetic, that statement was as she nailed three three pointers in the third quarter to open this game up and they needed that because the Lady Wildcats were making attempting to make a run of their own after an Ashley Foster steal and assist to Olivia Ogwumike, who converted an and one for a 31-28 lead, the Spartans would score the final 12 points of the quarter and appeared safe with a 41-30 lead
The problem with that was no one told Nancy Mulkey and the 6’8 freshman went to work, scoring on a variety of ways to help bring Woods back and a lay-up by Olivia O as time was winding down forced overtime. Inman had gone cold the last part of the fourth but she warmed up quickly in overtime and when you have a player who is capable of taking a game completely over, watch out.
Inman opened OT with back to back buckets as she drove in for left handed floaters, which set the tone as she scored 12 in the extra period. As hot as Inman became, Woods went cold as a Mulkey basket and a three from Madison Rundell were the only points they could come up with in overtime
Inman finished with 36, Bigott 11 and Barrios 10 while O. Ogwumike led Woods with 17 followed by Mulkey’s 14. Here’s something that’s funny, well at least to me and in more ways than one. Seven Lakes will be facing Pearland in the semifinals, I called Pearland a sleeper before the season and after their opening day 20 plus point loss to Langham Creek, I’m sure many thought I was sleeping on the job
