Rams Comeback Falls Short
Georgetown and Elsik have a little history as far as Austin and the state tournament, both teams have been five times. Georgetown’s Crystal Fortham showed exactly why she’s a McDonalds All American as she led Georgetown to a 56-51 victory over Elsik, scoring 27 points and pulling down 20 rebounds in the process. Fortham came out with authority, even though no one scored for the first two and a half minutes she made her presence felt on the defensive end. Emily Johnson’s two free throws broke the ice and Crystal Porter scored Elsiks first bucket almost halfway into the quarter. Fortham came right back and dropped a three and then Akunna Elonu answered with a put back. Lorrie Santoy hit Georgetown’s second three of the quarter, then Fortham hit her second three and sprinted down for a layup as the quarter ended with Georgetown up 14-6.
The second quarter opened with Georgetown scoring two quick buckets before a Spencer jumper. Elonu picked up a phantom foul, her second, with a little over 4 minutes left in the half but and came out a short time later. Brianna Bogards three upped the lead to 12 before a Jasmine Ocanas bucket. Emily Johnson’s three gave the Lady Eagles six for the half which ended with Lady Rams down 31-20. Ocanas and Porter combined for 12 of Elsik’s 20 first half points, while Fortham’s 13 led Georgetown. Raven Hill opened the second half with a bucket, however Fortham went back to work with an assist and a bucket in a sequence that saw Ocanas get injured with what appeared to be a hit around the face and she went to bench with her team down 13, this is where Georgetown was supposed to blow this thing wide open. The funny thing about Elsik is when you hear people say they can’t do this or they can’t that if such and such aren’t there just doesn’t register Three’s from Lindsey Cypher and Telissa Spencer, sandwiching an Elonu bucket kept them within ten. The Rams theme song should be “We Are Family” because when Ocanas returned to the game, she came back with a vengeance and her steal and lay-up cut the lead to six as the momentum switched and the third quarter ended 42-36.
Porter opened the final quarter with a basket, however Fortham answered, as she did all night. Spencer’s 15 footer cut the lead to 2, Fortham scores back to back buckets. Down by 6 with 2 minutes left, Elsik could have easily cracked yet again however a couple of free throws by Porter and an Ocanas three had them down by one, only to see Fortham answer yet again. Elsik had one more run left and a block by Porter followed by a 15 footer had the Rams again down by one, but Fortham would not be denied as she drop stepped one home and finished by knocking down both ends of one and one. Elsik gave it their all and represented Region 3 very well.
