Mustangs Out Run Wolves
Mustangs Out Run Wolves
Westside made that travel out to North Shore and almost came up huge as they fall to the Mustangs 48-44. The Wolves jumped out to a 6-2 lead and a Rachel Cumbo three pointer gave them their biggest lead of the game 9-4. A couple of Shore buckets, followed by a magnificent opposite Erin Luton reverse drop kept the Wolves up 11-8, then Shore went to work with a basket and four straight free throws to finish the first quarter up 14-11. Westside regained the lead after going on an 8-2 run to start the second quarter, however TJ Jefferson’s two free throws and a three pointer from La Kevia Castillo gave North Shore the lead again, 23-21, something they wouldn’t lose for the rest of the game.
The first half was marred with numerous turnovers from both teams due to the excellent defense they were playing. This game had playoff atmosphere as the fans were into it which trickled down onto the court. The battle between Luton and Katira Young was epic as both young ladies fought until the very end, Luton in fact was the driving force behind the Wolves offense as she finished the first half with 8 of their 23 points. Courtney Williams also had 8 points for North Shore and along with Jefferson’s 6, North Shore was up at the half 27-23.
Tiffany Davis started to click for the Wolves in the third, however Monique Bedford’s two free throws and Young’s turnaround banker at the buzzer gave North Shore their biggest lead going into the home stretch 37-28. I have seen some strange things happen at Westside over the years, so when Cumbo opened the final quarter with a three, I’m thinking here we go. A 5-2 Wolves run late in the quarter got the Wolves into striking distance, however a questionable travel call and 2 free throws from Williams sealed the victory for North Shore. Williams led way for the Mustangs with 13 points, followed by Young’s 10. Westside’s Davis led all scorers with 15, while Luton added 10 for the Wolves.
