Mustangs impressive in SBISD victory
CIENNA RODRIGUEZ-RIVERA
What’s my favorite saying? Probably not one I’m willing to write but actually there is no favorite only things that apply under various circumstances however two that I probably use more frequently with basketball are “it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against” and “the game starts at the one”.
Cienna Rodriguez Rivera was somewhat of household name before she even suited up for the Cy Ranch Mustangs and although her career has been steady, the 2014 star made a major jump over the weekend helping lead her team to the Spring Branch ISD Tournament Championship by defeating Klein Forest 42-40. Cy Ranch got there by edging a better than expected Cy Falls team while Klein Forest defeated a you better not turn your head on Westside team filled with young stars, however more on the other three later, this is all about the Mustangs .
Rodriguez-Rivera scored 13 points in the championship,move-in Kara Cezar led them with 15 in the semis and MVP Ashlyn Weimann was high scorer with 17 in the first game. The reason they won the championship game was the fact that Rodriguez-Rivera and Meia Rachel came up with big plays from start to finish against the Eagles throughout the tournament. Rachel was simply a beast in the paint as she and Rodriguez-Rivera joined Weimann on the All-Tournament team. Keep in mind they still have Sydney Coleman along with Kristin Kech and Ashley O’Block, two of the best long ball shooters in the area.
How impressive was Rivera at running her team? Double digit assists in two of the tournament games and topping it off with seven more in the finals. She did what she had to do, got her teammates involved throughout each game and took over when she needed to.
I don’t know how far their journey will take them but on Saturday, Cy Ranch rode higher than two Eagles which means that if everyone stays healthy, their road could lead to Austin.
