Katy Taylor Finds Offense
Westside’s Jasmine King attacked the basket right off the top and knocked two free down throws for the Wolves. Alexis Harris scored 8 points, including 2 three pointers as the Wolves went up 10-2 with a little over a minute and a half left in the opening period and it appeared they were about to open things up but during that last stretch, Katy Taylor went on a 9-0 run to lead 11-10 after one quarter. The first half was filled with missed lay-ups by both teams and neither shot well from the outside and although the offense did pick up for both teams in the second quarter, Taylor led 29-28 at the half, it was sloppy to say the least. Katy Taylor has struggled shooting the ball from on the outside however Holly Ray and Logan Johnson appeared to be back on track from the outside showing glimpses of their former selves from last season which will be needed as they go into their second round match against Cy Falls, I know Falls hasn’t played Alief Taylor yet but you have to trust me on this one.
Johnson led Taylor with 6 points at the half as their offense was spread out however Hill had almost half of the Wolves points (13) and this is how it went all game. Jamilyla Deboise opened the second half with a Westside bucket to give them the lead back however Amira Jenkins four point play appeared to swing the momentum toward Taylor as they led 34-30. Hill would not be denied as she went on offensive runs by herself as the Wolves outscored the Mustangs 11-4 but Taylor just had too many weapons. Either Jada Roberts was attacking the basket or Kendall Covington was doing whatever she wanted, not to mention big buckets off the bench from Kyana Mills, Samantha Roach and a buzzer beater by Kennedy McKern to give the Mustangs a 48-42 lead going into the final quarter seemed to deflate the Wolves.
Both teams fought hard the whole game and no one scored until Johnson nailed a three for the Mustangs almost two minutes into the last quarter and that shot took whatever air the Wolves had left away as Taylor cruised to a 66-51 victory. Hill finished with 26 points closing her career out with Westside while Taylor saw the resurgence of their senior threesome, Jenkins, Johnson and Ray, on the offensive end. Jenkins was equally impressive on the defensive end finishing with 4 blocks and 7 rebounds, she and Roberts had 10 points each, but the big story was Covington. She was relentless all game and scored 9 of her 11 points in the second half while also pulling down 11 rebounds
