Johnson shows San Antonio won’t be a pushover
I’ve been impressed with Recee Caldwell’s game since the first time I saw her play pre high school and for those of you who remember, I called it way back then, but since I keep reminding readers of the little ones I projected stardom for, it’s hard to forget. She is the key to San Antonio Johnson’s success and although they lost against Cy Ranch in the championship game, I was enough in their way against Hightower, along with knowing they handled Seven lakes with ease, that if Johnson isn’t the best team in San Antonio, then the tide is shifting and no longer will R4 be considered an easy win in Austin.
To be honest with you, although Reagan lost to Dekaney in last year’s state semifinal 50-35, the game was a lot closer than the final score indicated and this told me two things, the high school teams were getting a lot better coming out of R4 and Dekaney was going to have their hands full against Duncanville and as usual it appears I was correct.
Although I said Caldwell was the key, she is by far not the only one on the team who can go. Tierra Davenport was an absolute beast in the paint s well as attacking from the wing. She’s everything I heard she was and is definitely one of the top players I’ve seen in the country. I’d heard a lot about Erica Sanders and she too was impressive in their victory as she brought a lot of energy on both ends of the court. The most pleasant surprise had to be Gabbi Bowie who transferred into Johnson and is more suited for the guard spot as opposed to playing post however even at 5’8, I’m sure she created some issues for taller opponents at her old school
Will a team from R4 win state, I have no idea if they will even win a game in Austin but I do know at least four other teams are ranked ahead of Johnson in R4 so we’ll just have to wait on that call
