Friday at Coleman
There were two upsets on Friday night, Bellaire losing to Cy Woods 52-48, and me having a blowout on the way home. Before the season, I expected the Cardinals to make a run for Austin after coming up 6 points short against Hightower in the Regional Finals last season. Sometimes things just don’t happen like they should, Bellaire opened the season losing big to Elsik on opening day after pulling off a miraculous comeback victory over them in last season’s Elite 8. This started off as an ugly game, the score was tied at 4 at the four minute mark of the first quarter and the quarter ended with Woods up 9-7.
Trailing by two at the half, Bellaire outscored Woods 19-12 in the third quarter behind AJ Alix 8 points and 3 assists. In the fourth quarter, Woods couldn’t buy a bucket and were trailing 43-36 before Camille Williams nailed a three pointer, folowed by an Olivia Ogwumike bucket. Then Jenny Nash scored on a long three pointer, then a layup to cut the lead to 1. Williams was fouled on a drive to the bucket and tied the score on her first free throw. Williams missed her second free throw, however got the rebound and scored her biggest bucket of her high school career to give Cy Woods the lead. Bellaire was still in striking distance, only down by three but Chelsi Grimes, the smallest player on the court hit the biggest shot of the game to clinch the victory.
Audrey Garcia scored 14 points to lead the Wildcats, followed by Williams with 11, Nash 10 and Ogwumike 9. Raven Burns led all scorers with 16 for the Cardinals, followed by Alix with 15. Williams and Ogwumike are newcomers to the Wildcats and played a big part in Cy Woods victory. Williams is a junior transfer that had to sit out until the final week of the regular season and she adds a little depth to the Wildcats roster. Ogwumike’s a freshman who is making a name for herself and won’t be known as only Nneka and Chiney’s younger sister on the basketball court. For more on woods, check out the blog
In the second game, Cinco Ranch was up 4-2 and then Elsik went on a 14-2 run with Crystal Porter and Jasmine Ocanas doing the damage offensively scoring 10 of their teams first 13 points as they cruised to a 51-33 victory. Ocanas was the leading scorer with 16, while Porter chipped in 10.
