Eagles Land Undefeated In District
In one of the most anticipated match-ups of the season, the 17-5A showdown between Cy Woods and Cy Falls left little to be desired. Emotions were running high after the Cy Falls JV held on to beat Cy Woods along with it being senior night and I could tell this game was going to be special before I entered the gymnasium as the parking lot and stands were filled on both sides. Several coaches from across the state, including college coaches were on hand scouting teams along with several unsigned players who need to be playing somewhere after their senior season and the crowds from both sides getting into the game early. Oh how this reminded me of the days of not so long ago and I even had the chance to sit with one of the top 2005 players from our area, TK Lafluer who not only could play but knows and understands the game.
KIT METOYER
Cy Woods had nothing to lose but the game, Cy Falls had everything to lose, including credibility going into the playoffs and that is not something they needed as they won 49-39 however the game looked as if it could have gone either way in the first half as both teams did not shoot the ball well. Had it not been for an Eagle 15-0 run that started the third quarter, this game could have gone the other way, which is probably something Cy Woods has in their corner as they prepare for the playoffs because everyone should know the teams to beat in Region 3 are Cy Falls and Clear Springs, it’s them and a whole lot of other teams that are bunched in and ready to challenge.
AUDREY GARCIA
Cy Woods could quite possibly give 17-5A two teams in not only the Elite 8, but Final 4 as well, they have the artillery, Justice Crisp and Audrey Garcia, in their starting lineup who guided them to a 12-10 early lead. They have two young ladies about to forge their own legends in Olivia and Erica Ogwumike and they have instant offense off the bench from Camille Williams who more times than not has been one of, if not their leading scorer, tonight’s 12 points led Woods and she actually stopped the 15-0 run and went on to score 7 of her team’s next 10 points while Erica Ogwumike pulled down 12 rebounds, both sisters were in early fould trouble and had to sit.
SHERNISE ROBERTSON
Shernise Robertson came up big for the Eagles with 15 points, including 2 threes and 9-10 from the charity stripe, while Kit Metoyer added a couple of threes herself and finished with 10. Loryn Goodwin is their leading scorer however she doesn’t have to score to be effective and the energy that she and Sadalia Ellis put on the opposition in the Eagle press usually has them in charge a lot sooner than the third quarter. Goodwin was close to double digit rebounds, while Ellis was close, well should have been, to double digit steals to go along with her 8 points. The big news is that Carol Willie finished the majority of her layups for 8 points, which is bad news for opponents however things might be coming together at the right time. No more senior nights, no more emotional JV games, it’s showtime for the Eagles from here on because any loss means it’s over and I’m sure they’re ready to soar as high as they can
