College Station explodes to Aggieland Invitational Championship wins
BRYAN, TEXAS- This was my first Aggieland Invitational I’ve witnessed start to finish ever, I normally head up to the Dallas area and hit their major events however this trip was more sentimental than anything else. Several of the young ladies playing, Alexys King (College Station) Treece Daily (Mexia) and Darby Hurly (A&M Consolidated) are in their senior season, I first saw them playing for TWELVE and I’ll come back to that story on my BLOG but I’m always looking for upsets and challenges and with 64 teams in two divisions, one more time, talent is everywhere and that just thrills me even more. I’ll start off with College Station who was more than impressive being down 42-18 against Rockwall halfway through the third quarter before going on a 40-8 run to close it out in the semifinals and just to prove how right I was before the regular season started when I stated this squad had the tools and were explosive, they outscore Rudder 53-9 in the championship game, Rudder knocked off TABC 6A #1 Hendrickson the night before, we’ll revisit that as well
Alexys King can score in droves, double digit second halves in just about every game during the event including the last two is one of the reasons I keep saying she’s one of the top UNSIGNED guards in Texas and one of the top players in the state, I ain’t just started doing this but you have Rebekah Hailey who just keeps showing she’s more than a long ball shooter, she put on a show but the show didn’t stop with King and Hailey. Mia Rivers who just brought it every game and I mean BROUGHT it, Ailyna Collins doing stuff that doesn’t show up in the box score and the grit from Na’layjah Johnson diving for loose balls, battling for rebounds, whatever, and that whole starting five scored in double digits in the championship game. Add Ailyah Collins, one of the top freshmen in Texas comes off the bench and puts up numbers, that’s six players that can also shoot the long ball consistently but this squad came to play, big plays from Love Ryberg throughout the event, Marlee Kopetsky, Emilky Hanik and Yaxin Dnah doing the little things that also don’t always show up, not to mention when Cornecia “Sissy” Thompson gets back……….
