Cy Fair Evaluation Tip Sheet-Middle School
TIA WRIGHT, ANDREA MRTINEZ, ALEX COLEMAN & HALEY CALHOUN
Evidently someone is reading my stuff because many of the young faces I saw at the Cy Fair Evaluation Camp were seen a couple of weeks earlier at the Ganon Baker Camp so I’ll put it like the other SC, you better watch out because you never know when I’m going to pop up in town and believe me it’s probably going to be more than once a year.
I love watching middle school ball players and younger simply because of this statement I’m about to make. Although there are many I can call as “can’t misses”, I haven’t seen one player yet I would ever write off because in girls basketball, this stuff can change at a moment’s notice.
I can’t tell you how many 10 year olds who were creating oohs and aahs from the stands that peaked before high school and faded away simply because they quit growing, stopped working on their games or a number of other reasons and although there is no sure fire method to keep getting taller, trust me I haven’t grown since the sixth grade, you can always continue to work on your skills to get better.
I’ve already mentioned a lot of the players I saw at the GB Camp and they stood out again this time so remember, once you’re in my database, you are there! I’m going on record again about the Texas 2017 class and it seems everywhere I go, I’m looking at some young ladies who will make an impact in high school almost immediately. I was right about 2012, trust me, this class is even deeper and with a little bit of everything including numerous Top 100 candidates.
The first five players on the “Tip Sheet” are from the team formerly known as the Texas Stars who are now Cy Fair Elite 2017
2017
Carly Jenkins-5-4 guard-Allen TX- Jenkins is poised beyond her years and although I don’t like making comparisons, let’s just say she’s a gamer who not only handles pressure, she welcomes it. Whether she was handling the ball, shooting or passing with heat on her, she stayed cool and calm while handling her business
Andrea Martinez-5-4 guard-Wylie TX- Martinez showed me a little bit of everything and even more when I saw some clips of her. She has range, sees the floor well and has a little flair with her many go to moves. Deceptively quick, she can take off you off the dribble or nail the step back
Haley “Bear” Calhoun-5-9 post-Sachse TX– I’m always multi-tasking so when I heard somewhat in a soft spoken voice answering to Bear, I immediately looked up. Don’t know where the name came from but on the court, she showed no signs of being in hibernation as she stayed active and was dominant on both ends of the court
Alex Coleman-5-4 guard-McKiney TX- Strong, athletic and acrobatic guards always impress me but Coleman does so much more. She can handle the ball very well and her ability to take a hit and finish at an early age is a huge plus. What’s also a plus is her midrange game which is what many college coaches consider as a lost art
Tia Wright-5-7 forward-McKinney TX- I knew Wright was a player as she caught my eye during the pre-game drills and once the games started, once again I was RIGHT. She attacks the basket from anywhere on the floor and at times; she appeared to explode after her first step. Mix all that with her ability to create her own shot
CARLY JENKINS
Alexis Johnson-6-0 forward-Houston TX- I saw Johnson play last summer and was impressed by not only her size but skill level while playing a few years up. She’s grown at least an inch and a half and her skills are even better than what impressed me before. If she keeps progressing, with her size she’s a defensive nightmare waiting to happen
Brittany Rodgers-5-8 guard-San Antonio TX- Although she was a late addition to the camp, Miss Rodgers let everyone know she was in the neighborhood early. Not only did she do a good job during the drills, her energy trickled over into the games. She also showed the ability to attack and finish strong
2019
Ashley Daniel-6-1 post-Houston TX-Although raw in many areas, when you’re already athletic and at that magic number, six feet, things are probably going to fall into place. Daniel has plenty of upside, she comprehends the game well and her ability to anticipate alone is a huge plus
