Barbers Hill vs Memorial
Barbers Hill vs Memorial
This was a must see game for me. Both teams are expected to do well this season, both have new coaches, Kit Kyle-Martin at Barbers Hill and Jyusef Larry for Memorial and both teams are rolling out with somewhat new styles than in previous seasons. Barbers Hill came to town looking for win number two of the season after winning their opener against Aldine Eisenhower and appeared to be on their way to getting one, leading after the first quarter 13-10 behind Houston Chronicle Preseason All Greater Houston post Kendall Shaw, #35, who provided the offensive punch for the Eagles in the early going.
Memorial on the other hand was looking for their first victory after losing an offensive thriller to Klein Forest in their opener and after a sloppy start, they managed to take the lead going into the half 24-23 on the strength of 9 points from Ellen Anderson, above, and 8 from Laurel Carrell, below, who came in off the bench to provide some much needed instant offense.
The second half was nip and tuck as Memorial’s point guard, Madison Miller, controlled the offense however as Memorial appeared to be ready to pull away, Barbers Hill point Shannon Evans nailed a deep three to ignite an Eagle run. Back to back Eagle buckets gave them their first lead since the first half, 39-38 at the 5:31 mark however that was the last bucket they would score until a put back at the buzzer.
Kelly Wilson scored 7 of the Mustangs 14 points in the final quarter and Miller sealed the deal with four straight free throws in the last minute as Memorial hung on to win 49-41. Anderson was high scorer for Memorial with (18) while Carrell added (10). Shaw was the leading scorer for the Eagles with (18), while Jenna Silva, #5 in first photo, chipped in (12).
In some of the other games around the area, Hightower is sending messages and showing people the should be ranked as the number one team in the state, beating defending State Champions, Cy Fair, 57-35 at home. Brittney Matthew lead the scorers with (19) while Cassie Peoples had (12) for the Bobcats.
Bellaire is still looking for their first win as they lose to North Shore 81-72, despite (28) from AJ Alix and (18) from Raven Burns. North Shore had five players in double figures, led by Courtney Williams (23), Katira Young’s (16), Tayler Jefferson and Monique Bedford both had (14) and Karina Young added (13).
Another team that is sending messages is Cy Falls, first going on the road and defeating Klein Collins in the season opener and now beating Katy Taylor 69-45. Falls had four players in double figures, led by Macy Moore (19), Larissa Scott (12) while Sedalia Ellis and Katherinine Metoyer both added (10). Amanda Jungswirth led Katy Taylor with (13) while Holly Ray scored (10).
Even though it was the semifinal game in the Conroe Tournament, it probably should have been the championship as the Woodlands upended College Park 56-41. The Woodlands were led in scoring by Paige Bradley’s (13) and Anna Strickland’s (10). Rachel Bowie (15) and Alexia Sanders (11) led the way for College Park.
