Lady Phenoms Live Up To Name
JESSICA ARROYO, “NE-NE” ARMSTEAD, JASMYNE HARRIS
I heard about the Lady Houston Phenoms months ago when they tried to get into the first GPR Certified event back in March however the event was full and I missed a chance to see how good this team everyone was ranting and raving about. I ran into another Houston Phenom team and I’m thinking, yeah it’s a good team with some players who will play at the next level but there are plenty of good middle school based teams around. At the Houston Insiders Basketball Classic, I had my first chance to see them do battle against the 2015 Texas Warriors which provided plenty of excitement in a triple overtime thriller that was heated to say the least, primarily because the officials let the game get out of hand and in a situation where you have a lot of players from the same area going into battle, sometimes situations occur. Several stars came into their own in that game, the Warriors Kimi Carter showed she could carry a team while being punished on the court and Logan Carger showed a glimmer of hope for North Shore in their bid to stay among the top teams in the area and she also proved that she is more than a very good volleyball player, more on the Warriors and their younger squad later but let me break down some of the Phenoms
SHANNON JONES
They have a lot of players that can simply go off. You need a three; 2015 Keydreena Howard (North Shore) and Dejah Sonnier can deliver multiple times. How about clogging up the middle, finishing strong in the paint or giving you that big rebound you need, call on ninth graders Ashley Dickson (CE King) or Kenechi Udichime (North Shore), both around 6’2. Then you have athletic clones that can simply do the same thing and that is handle the ball, attack the basket and finish strong, Shannon Jones, Marneckia Armstead and Jasmyne Harris. Harris happened to put on one of the best highlight moves of the tournament when she did a crossover that left me flat footed and amazed but this team has some players who are on the verge of being next level players, some who are going to be next level players and some who might explode into big-time status. I’m looking forward to watching this group of 2015 and 2016 players grow and progress over the course of their career.
