Temple Stars Pay Dividends For Austin Elite
KATARA CHAPEL
Fonzell Martin and Tommy Gregg, founders and coaches of The Austin Elite program has a lot of history going for them. Not only do they host one of the top Texas events every June, the Tyrone Johnson Classic, they have put together a large amount of victories under their belt however the most important thing they have done is the fact that they’ve helped put countless young ladies in the position to play at the next level including their own daughters. This season is no different as the club is rolling with next level talent galore and after winning second place in the Houston Insiders Basketball Classic WNBA division, they showed that they are in July form right now. This team is loaded and ironically three of their stars play on the same Temple High School team which may be putting itself in a very good position for a state title run next season but first let me break down those three.
Katara Chapel (2013)- at 6’1 and very athletic, she would be a shoe in for a next level player however what she has added over the past two seasons is the ability to step out and hit the mid-range. Her athleticism doesn’t stop there as that, along with her speed gives her the ability to not only attack from anywhere on the floor but to also guard every position
Alyssa Jones (2013)- Faster than a speeding bullet with the ball is how I once described her however what I witnessed this weekend is there is no Kryptonite slowing her game down anywhere. Can she score? Any way you want it baby, that’s my take and talk about speeding bullets, her passes through traffic were a blur
Tyesha Taylor (2014)- Facebook’s stock didn’t rise as high as many expected however if you’re in it for the long haul, it’s a no brainer which is which is how I would describe Taylor. At 6’3 and with a college ready body right now, well since middle school, her ability to rebound and control the paint makes her a high commodity.
These three form the nucleus of what I often refer to as the “Temple of Doom” with their high school team however that has certainly filtered over to their RFW squad as well
