Elonu Becomes Areas 77th Signee
The Elonu name has been synonymous with not only girls basketball in the Houston area in this millennium but basketball period and now the baby of the bunch, Akunna, has decided to attend UTSA after weighing all of her options. When I talk about players not panning out early and continuing to work and progress, Akunna comes to mind immediately. After seeing her running around games barely in elementary school while older sisters Adoara and Adayze were making names for themselves, there was no doubt in my mind she would be a next level player. As a freshman, she was raw however the drive was in place as she took something from both of her sisters along the way and has progressed into an absolute dominating presence on both ends of the floor. She wasn’t a great shooter that first year at Elsik, now she can consistently hit the mid-range, in fact I watched her drain threes over the weekend in the Houstonians tournament and even her ball handling, something I truly considered suspect got better over the course of her high school career which helped tremendously during the Rams state championship run and almost run this season.
At 6’0, she plays near the rim and all over the floor and whether you need her at the 3, 4 or 5, she just goes out and gets the job done. I recall Elsik playing in a game this season and a guard scored 26 points in the first half against them, Akunna held her to 2 points second half. During those playoff runs, I can’t tell you how many near triple or quadruple doubles she put it up because not only can she score and rebound, her jumping ability has had her near or over 10 blocks several times not to mention her ability to make the right pass to the right person made her hard to handle. After finishing her high school career as a back to back All Greater Houston and All State player, I’m predicting her to blow completely up and let me add this with a twist from the old cartoon. Coyotes, this Roadrunner will be after you.
