Sydney Colson Speaks To Insiders
It was funny watching my daughter, Sydney Colson, come to the Insiders practice and speak to the younger players about several things including how hard it is to get to the next level, the extra work you have to put in if you make it and should you be fortunate enough to play professionally, even more hard work is in store. She also talked about the importance of them getting their degrees in order to have something to fall back on because even if they make it to the professional level, the average pro players career lasts only four to six seasons. She also touched on being appreciative and giving back which is probably the attributes she possesses that make me the proudest. In elementary school, I knew she would play in college, maybe not what level she would play at, but I knew it would happen based on my observations. Had she not scored one point or played one minute at Texas A&M, I was happy at the way she handled several bumps and bruises, not to mention nonsense throughout her career, usually by adults with ulterior motives or agendas but sometimes things like that make you stronger and you learn from them. I guess during her career prior to college, she was placed in the minority because I didn’t believe in recruiting other top tier players to hide her weaknesses in club ball and I also wanted her to go against whoever was supposed to be the stud or star player on the opposing teams and she usually finished the games being one of, if not the best player on the court. I guess she’s also in another minority becoming the first player from the Houston area to be named to an All American team, win a National Championship and make it to the WNBA, so although there are several formulas out there, this particular one worked. So many times it’s the parents who get caught up in the wrong things and lose perspective on what the big picture really is and watching what she has become speaks volumes about this talented young lady whose talent goes way beyond the basketball court.
