Heavy Hitters Meet In Metroplex
The Sandra Meadows Classic and Mansfield Rotary Tournaments will both feature not only some of the top teams in Texas but some of the best players the state has as well. I remember the first time I attended the Sandra Meadows Tournament back in 2006 to watch my daughter’s team, Westside, play in it. You could feel the history as you entered the arena, seriously if you’ve never attended it you should. Westside became the first team from this area to win the tournament, followed by Bellaire the following season and Hightower last year. This season the tournament will have Hightower, Westside and TABC # 15 returning along with several other state ranked 5A teams such as #2 Southlake Carroll, #4 Duncanville and #11Desoto along with #2 Kennedale from 3A. Also the TABC top 3 private schools will be playing, #1 Westbury Christian, #2 John Paul II and #3 Bishop Lynch
My first trip to Mansfield also gave me a glimpse of history; this was the school Erin Grant led to four consecutive 5A State Championships, something that may never happen again. As loaded as Sandra Meadows will be, this tournament should be equally entertaining and exciting as it will feature #3 Pfluggerville, #12 Timberview, #18 Cedar Hill and #24 Amarillo from 5A while top 4A schools, #3 Canyon and #4 Summit will be in attendance as well. This will give me an opportunity to see more talented players from Texas and it doesn’t matter if they’re playing on a ranked team or not, there are players everywhere throughout the state.
