Dekaney Takes Early Detour To Championship
SHUNTA NEVITT & JALEESA CHAPEL
Dekaney opened the season with a double digit loss to North Shore. This was surprising, at least to me because I consider Dekaney a legitimate contender in area Region 2 and I also pegged them as the areas #4 team in “Da Magazine”. That opening loss has been avenged as they knock off #3 (Hightower) and #7 (Manvel) on their way to the Fort Bend ISD Championship. Dekaney is the most athletic team in the area and they have players who understand their roles. Top 100 candidate Brianna Taylor continues to battle nagging injuries over the past two seasons but juniors Amber Driver and Jaleesa Chapel are paying huge dividends for this squad, in fact Chappel started in place of Taylor and score 14 points in the championship game. Before we get everything twisted, this team belongs to Alexis Durley (Cincinnati) and Shunta Nevitt (Texas Tech) who scored 14 and 15 points respectively, Nevitt was unconscious in the fourth quarter knocking down 3 three pointers.
ALEXIS DURLEY
Dekaney has so many kids that can come in and give you something, Kim Hill hit some big shots off the bench just as Manvel made mini-runs, Driver would make a defensive stop but the most improved player on that squad has to be Chapel, who is also a huge track star. In Region 2, Dekaney and The Woodlands are ahead of the pack in the area but the question is this. Will that be enough to get to Austin?
