Thursday at Coleman
The Westside Wolves made an impressive run last season, making the Regional Final for the third time in five years and the way they jumped out on Cy Falls they appeared to be in route to another. Tiffany Davis was simply on fire for the Wolves knocking down 3 three-pointers in the first quarter and scoring 11 of their 14 points as the first quarter ended in a tie. Both the Eagles Sedalia Ellis and birthday girl Kit Metoyer each had 5 points in the same quarter, including a three pointer from each.
Westside went into the half leading 28-22 but Falls outscored them 23-6 in the third quarter and never looked back winning 65-49. Metoyer scored 23 points while Ellis had 19 and Macy Moore added 11 for the Eagles. Davis led all scorers with 23 and Rachel Cumbo added 10 for Westside. Happy Birthday Kit!
In the second game, Cy Fair’s six year Regional Final Four and four year run to Austin was at stake as they took on the Katy Taylor Mustangs. I picked Taylor because they have more weapons and have shown they are a team to contend with after knocking off three of the Top 10 ranked teams in TABC’s state poll including two number ones, Hightower and Atascocita. Jada Roberts and Amira Jenkins got the ball rolling early and Amanda Jungswirth finished up as Taylor cruised to victory.
Anytime you have a player capable of putting up numbers like Cassie Peoples can, your team has a chance, however this was a night when it wouldn’t happen. BFND, Bobcat Fight Never Dies, stood true tonight because even though they lost, they made it interesting cutting it under ten but wound losing 79-59. Peoples closes out her outstanding high school career with 22 points for the Bobacats. Speaking of interesting, Katy Taylor has a chance to knock off their third number one team next week when they face Cy Falls. Jungswirth led all scorers with 28 points, followed by Roberts and Jenkins with 17 each, and Logan Johnson added 12.
In other games, my Region 3 Elite 8 picks are still alive as North Shore, Elkins, Hightower and Clear Springs all won. Bellaire plays Cy Woods tomorrow while Elsik takes on Cinco Ranch right back at the Coleman Center. In Region 2, Dekaney got knocked out but the Taz is still alive. The Woodlands play tomorrow against Round Rock McNeil. More on the blog!
