METROPLEX TRIFECTA

dville more vs

I’ve made several comments about how I don’t feel like the young ladies get enough exposure for what they do, however it seems to be picking up steam. Sure, I still meet people who want to talk about Girl’s or Women’s Basketball and they only thing they bring up is the kid that can dunk or UCONNS winning streak, after that, nothing. There is plenty of tradition in the Metroplex area. I saw that first hand when Westside won the Sandra Meadows Classic in my daughter’s senior year because when I first walked into the arena, it was euphoric to say the least. Just looking at the feats accomplished by Duncanville and the knowledge and support of their fans, I could just feel it. The game is taken a bit more serious in the Dallas area, media coverage has always been great and the updated box scores posted on the Sandra Meadows Tournament Bracket amazes me as well. The semifinals of the game, along with the finals can be watched by clicking this link.

I had a chance to cover a couple of other tournaments as well and the two best games I saw involved Desoto, first against Irving Macarthur and then Skyline in the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Classic. All three teams are legitimate contenders for the Texas 5A State Championship. Desoto defeated Frisco Wakeland in the championship game last night, Wakeland is the top rated 4A team in the state and they too have a chance to win it all in Austin. Speaking of winning it all in Austin, I made it over to the Mansfield Rotary Tournament and when I think of Mansfield, the name Erin Grant pops in my head. You may have caught pictures of her on my blog along with my mentioning she holds a record that will never be broken, 4 State Championships as a player at Mansfield High. It may be tied, but never broken.

To top that off, I also had a chance to see Canyon and their legendary coach Joe Lombard who has racked up wins and state titles galore over the years, Canyon also won the championship game over Pflugerville last night. The Canyon kids were impressive to say the least and while you’re wondering how they do it, well it’s simple, they just get the job done. I’ll be posting pictures and summaries on the blog until after New Year’s and I appreciate the hospitality from all. I also want to give a special thanks to Steve Martin from Sandra Meadows, Raymond Meeks from Mansfield Rotary and Goree Johnson from Dallas ISD for all of your help along with what you have done and continue to do for the game.
