Cy Falls jumps to 8th with Katy Classic title

KATY, Texas- Cy Falls defeated Seven Lakes in the championship game of the Conoco Phillips Katy Classic.  Cy Falls wins their second tournament of the season; they captured the SBISD Tournament earlier this season and simply have been one of the most explosive offensive teams I’ve seen so far. Qay Cleveland captured her second MVP honor and she was joined on the All-Tournament team with Jae Branch and Dasia Craft. Cleveland, Branch and freshman sensation Joanne Taylor have all put up numbers in various games throughout what I call part one of the season and those numbers will come in handy as they play in arguably the toughest district (17) in the area and when you add long ball threat Hunter Begley, I doubt seriously if another team has as many three point threats around here. My first look at Seven Lakes was a good one, All Tournament selectees Cydney Varner and Michelle Fokum carry the offensive load for the talented squad however their supporting cast played huge and will be a factor come playoffs. Varner’s midrange game continues to excel, while Fokum, though undersized, is a beast in the paint. Bailey Brown also made things happen and I’ve seen enough of Julia Bannister and Emily Townsend to know these five are battle tested. Cinco Ranch stars Corin Evans and Kelly Lynch also were named to the All-Tournament team and I guess they pulled off the biggest surprise, at least to me, by defeating Atascocita in the quarterfinals. The Cougars roll with eight players and they wound up defeating Cy Ranch for third place. The Cy Ranch offense wasn’t the same without a healthy Deauzya Richards who was already less than 100% in the semis and missed the last game completely however Arianna Whitfield is a capable scorer and put up numbers as well as freshman D’Asia Collins who has made the adjustment with ease. Ranch, also from District 17, won the FBISD Tournament earlier this season and with Cy Woods, the new area #1, winning the Peggy Whitley Classic and finishing second in the Texas Invitational as well as Cy Fair placing fourth in Peggy Whitley, this shows the firepower inside the district.
