2014 Cy Fair Invitational Tip Sheet
JORDAN HOSEY
CYPRESS, Texas- The Cy Fair Invitational was a hit when it started over a decade ago and let me say that nothing has changed. With over teams and countless players in attendance that will be potentially playing at various colleges, many showed they will not only play at the highest level in college but beyond that as well. The three Texas Nike sponsored clubs were all there, Cy Fair Ogwumike, DFW Elite T-Jack and Texas United Nike, along with several of the state’s top teams including AD Elite, South Texas Hoyas, Austin Elite SA Finest and the Dallas Heroes to name a few. One thing is for sure, the teams certainly got tuned up for whatever end of month exposure event they’re heading to, whether it’s Boo Williams, Deep South or Heart of Texas. I made it back in time to cover all the teams in D1 division on Sunday, all games were at Cy Woods and I just wanted to give you some names that stood out that day for my always informative Tip Sheet
2015
Jordan Hosey-6’1 wing-Cy Fair Ogwumike-The magic continues for the magical young lady who has already committed to Texas. Hosey was simply dominant and I’m talking about both ends of the floor. She can score in the paint or face the basket and hit the jumper but her defense, rebounding and shot blocking continue to make her a complete player
Tierra McCowan-6’7 post-DFW Elite T-Jack-McCowan is just getting into T-Jack shape after an impressive track season. Her endurance is already up since I saw her in March as well as her aggressiveness which I’ve always wanted to see in her. Well it’s there and she’s now realizing how dominant she is in the paint as she controlled both ends
Alexis Green-6’1 forward-AD Elite- The more I watch Green, the more I see the progression and she’s hard to handle in the paint. Strong body, yet quite agile, she’s starting to make it easier than what it is. She rebounded extremely well and finished nicely , she’s been doing that but watching her defend on the perimeter showed me she’s more than just a post
JOYNER HOLMES
2016
Kiana Ray-6’1 wing-Texas United Nike- Ray has always been a player I would compare to a silent assassin, she just simply does so many things that might not show up in the box score. She’s a nightmare for defenders, but her unselfishness is what really stands out as she’s always looking for the best shot available, many times passing up her own
Joyner Holmes-6’3 wing-Dallas Heroes-There are only a few times I get up from my seat, bathroom, concessions or to leave, but the first time I saw Holmes, she was in the open court and took off from the free throw line, yes I got up. She’s what I consider ultra-athletic and she’s dropping the long and mid-range jumpers with amazing accuracy for her size
Isis Lane-6’3 post-Oklahoma Showcase-Lane is long and a lot stronger than she appears. When I caught her last season, she ran the floor and altered shots plus showed plenty of potential. She still has a high upside, even though she finished with contact, knocked down a few mid-range jumpers and blew me away with a three
Kendrick Clark-6’0 guard-Fury 2015-Clark adds a dimension being at the magic number of six feet with options galore. One of those options is her being able to put it on the floor and get to the rim, finishing strong. She also can rebound and score from the outside with accuracy plus her on ball defense was good
Imani Robinson-6’0 wing-Austin Elite- If she isn’t at the magic number, she’s close but more importantly she plays like she is. Robinson can jump out of the gym, her athleticism enables her to maneuver while hanging in the air for buckets but it also gives her an edge on defense as she comes up with steals in droves for lay-ups going the other way
Eryka Sydney-5’6 guard- Houston Insiders- Sydney is handling the heat and believe me it’s coming at her. She’s showing more and more that she has the ability to take over a game offensively while doing so in the flow while on the flip side, she’s making her teammates better, setting them up for point blank opportunities
2017
Arianna Whitfield-5’8 guard-Cy Fair Nike Walker- Whitfield was forced into the starting line-up early in HS as a freshman, she handled it with ease and it shows against older players. Great body and agility, not to mention court sense, she’s coming up huge on both ends of the court and her steal for a lay-up sealed a victory on Sunday
Brittany Rodgers-5’7 guard-South Texas Hoyas Blue-Rodgers continues to show she’s a gamer; she relishes the pressure and steps up to the plate in crunch time. She’s strong and fearless, can take a lick better than a Timex and still bring on both ends. Rodgers had the highlight of the day, I described on Twitter but the more I think about it, I don’t even believe what I saw as she went past the basket and somehow converted it for an and one
