’23 All Eyez On Me 2024 Standouts
I overemphasize the importance of placing yourself in front of KNOWLEDGEABLE people and like a broken record, I always say “There is no one that knows more about this, which is RELEVANT than I do” and when you factor in the agendas to go along with countless other things I sometimes hashtag #ThereIsNoMe and as I promised, every player was evaluated. I’ll be dropping 2025, 2026, and 2027 classes right here, stay tuned
Alani Owens (Covenant Christian)
Owens is an athletic guard that uses a deceptive first step to get by defenders and attack the basket. Her body control was nice, it helped her finish after contact but she also handled the ball and saw the floor under pressure. Her shot selection was solid, she created it and knocked it down from the outside and she played good defense both in the halfcourt and baseline to baseline
Alex Rague (Leander)
Rague showed she create her shot in both the skills as well as the games and her pull-up jumper was impressive in both as well because she knocked down shots with a hand in her face. She set the defender up in multiple ways to attack the basket, she also had good body control on her finish yet her court vision, in the set as well as in transition, got her teammates good looks
Debi Hernandez (San Antonio Lee)
Hernandez can fall into that “point a minute” category because she can not only fill it up from mid to long-range, she can take over a game offensively and score in droves. Her shooting was always there, especially the “catch and shoot” yet her ballhandling and acrobatic finishes have gotten better. Not only does she see the floor, but her blistering passes “on the money” in traffic are also always a highlight for me
Jemina Yowa (Pflugerville)
Yowa gave me a GREAT first look and not only was impressed with her hands and footwork, I was equally impressed with how fluidly she moved. She’s “long and athletic” but also tall, around 6’3, and she went after everything off the rim which is always a good sign. I also enjoyed her defense, not only inside the paint but stepping out of it. The scary part is her upside, she’ll take it to another level at the next level
Kaley Wiltz (Summer Creek)
Wiltz has EXPLOSIVE in CAPS but no CAP here because she left the defender standing still numerous times in the set and she too showed some acrobatic finishes after contact. She also blew by players in the open court and her seeing the floor and making the right pass in the open court told me a lot yet her defense told me even more. Her “on the ball” pressure and quick hands created turnovers
Keeley Chaddick (Covenant Christian)
Chaddick did a good job creating her shot and watching her do it during the 1 on 1 drill grabbed my attention. I love her poise under pressure and watching her elevate and drop it with a hand in her face was nice yet it became even nicer during the games when she showed she could drop it off the dribble. Speaking of off the dribble, she attacked strongly with either hand and finished after the lick
Kyren Wilson (Atascocita)
Wilson was overly impressive because she immediately grabbed my attention going hard in the 1 on 1 drill by diving for loose balls. She’s one of those “never takes a play-off ” type of player and her defense stood out session as it was smothering at times. She too was explosive off the dribble and showed good body control to finish and her jumper was consistent as she created it while being defended
Lexi Arzate (Midway)
Arzate would be one of my nominees for most improved over the past season and first of all, she stands at “the magic number” which is 6’0 and she’s using the “hands and footwork” even more and finishing stronger after contact. She’s also showing the short jumper as well as attacking the basket stronger from the wing. What really had me smiling was her seeing the floor better, well that and rebounding on both ends
Mya Wesley (Stephenville)
Wesley had plenty of buzz coming until I realized I saw her a couple of seasons ago and as good as she was, she’s taken her game to yet another level as she was a scoring machine. The mid to long-range jumper was nice, she scored off the dribble but peep this, she outrebounded taller players and went coast to coast and showed the stop and pop or just kept it and finished strongly off the dribble. Solid defense and very good court vision
Pearson McVay (Aggieland)
McVay is one of those players I saw as a freshman yet had no roster yet I’ll never forget how intimidating she was. Why won’t I forget? Because it came back after seeing her MONSTER BLOCK early in the session. She’s long and athletic, over 6’0 with some impressive timing to block shots and put something on the mind of whoever challenges her. She’s mobile, grabbed the rebound, and went coast to coast a few times, she also showed solid hands and footwork to score around the basket yet watching her go baseline and score on a reverse layup had me smiling
Ryan McDonald (Rouse)
McDonald had me check my app to see if I could find some steals yet watching her pick-pockets effortlessly was enough for me. She handled the ball under pressure, she saw the floor in transition as well as in the set and she scored off the dribble and her body control helped her finish strongly after contact. Her defense was also nice and her “on the ball” pressure, along with the steals helped create turnovers
