2021 TJ Showcase- Jene Carter Division Tip Sheet
This was the top division of the Tyrone Johnson Showcase and it was loaded with players that are going to play at various levels of the next level. If I omit a team or have little to say, I didn’t take the time to watch squads that failed to turn in rosters since they didn’t take the time to get in and it’s amazing as July travels start that necks will be broken to turn them in to NOT be seen but what do I know. The championship game between Auston Elite RFW and Houston Skyrise Edmond was so exciting that I’m doing a special Tip Sheet on them, I’ll drop it for free on Prep Girls Hoops Texas
2022
Aniya Anderson-5’1 PG (Fort Worth Lady Hornets) Timber Creek HS-good court vision is always a plus but her ballhandling adds, so does her attacking the basket. She’s athletic and defends well
Princess Anderson-5’6 SG (Houston Lady FAM Elite 17U) Beaumont United HS-one o the best scorers in the state, she just puts herself in the “you can’t stop me” mode, and her mid to long-range as well as attacking and finishing was on full display
Aspen Edwards-5’6 CG (Houston Lady FAM Elite 17U) Atascocita HS– the progression I have seen in her game since entering high school has been among the best, she can score from outside or off the dribble, she can run a team by controlling the tempo and she’s so unselfish
Samora Watson-5’6 SG (Houston Queens Elite 17U) Clear Falls HS-the mid to long was one of the best at the event, she was just hard to handle but she also played the passing lane and with her speed, that was baskets going the other way
Mia Thomas-5’5 G (Houston Queens Elite 17U) Summer Creek HS– tip Sheet waiting to happen because she continues to be one of the most consistent shooters I’ve seen this club season. Her pull-up is smooth, so is the stop and pop in transition
Sian Phipps-6’3 P (Houston United 2022 Gold) Cy Springs HS-she has turned so many corners on her way to the finish line that she will definitely raise some eyebrows. That drop-step has become a monster yet her inside dominance is rising
Peyton Overton-5’8 SG (Houston United 2022 Gold) Dulles HS-smoothness has always been there and watching her set the defender up for the jumper was in full effect yet she brought some heat on defense, hit teammates for assists, and rebounded
Aliyah Craft (Lady Thunder King) Huntsville HS-from virtually unknown to picking up offers, she has shown that I have her in the Top 100 for a reason. The jumper is consistent, she’s athletic, attacks and finishes with good body control, and plays good defense
Empress Roberts-5’8 G (Pro Skills Austin) Harker Heights HS-one of the top guards in Texas you may not know about yet you should because she’s an explosive scorer, goes hard the whole game, baseline to baseline and the heat she brings on defense doesn’t cool off
Ashunti Cooper-5’4 G (Pro Skills Austin) Lexington HS-her ability to create her shot in tight situations was on full display and that as well as her SWB, speed with the ball, just gives her countless options which include her passes, court vision is very good
Ileana Morales (Texas Hoops 2022)-heady guard that creates for herself and her teammates and setting her squad up for easy baskets is huge, so was her shooting from mid to long-range yet she attacks the basket strongly and finishes the same way
Gabriella Gamboa (Texas Hoops 2022)-her size, her strength, and her power totally created problems for defenders because she finished after contact on the inside but watching her also battle for rebounds definitely was impressive as she goes after the ball wherever it is
Zeta Jenkins-6’1 F (TWE 2022) Bowie HS– strong finisher in the paint yet she does it with either hand and that says a lot about her progression over the years because she was primarily a rebounder and defender but adding the power inside as well as the soft touch is nice
Ellie Erwin (Texas Supergirls Gold 17U) checked my search bars and has nothing on her so either I hadn’t seen her or never had a roster with her on it but she left a lasting first impression because of her size, strength, and agility, she finished in the paint as well as off the dribble yet she also faced the basket and scored
Jarahle Daniels (Texas Supergirls Gold 17U)– attacks well off the dribble, good ballhandler and showed she could dish while attacking or finish sometimes acrobatically but her body control was nice, so was her defense
Brenna Walsh (Waco Lady Panthers)-from that primarily a long ball threat pre-high school to what she showed me just floored me because she attacks and drops the pull-up from midrange or finishes after contact but ballhandling, seeing the floor, and defending all were good
Shantavia Cobb (Waco Lady Panthers)-I teased her over the years about being slippery “corn o the Cobb” yet that first step, that speed, and that ballhandling has led to so many baskets since I’ve been watching her and it’s still there but the mid to long-range and playing the passing lane was there too until she sprained her ankle
2023
Janae Tucker-5’8 CG (Houston United 2022 Gold) Pearland HS called her a #D1Lock before high school and she continues to prove I was right because she’s heady, can score mid to long-range yet can also score in the flow but her ability to see the floor jut does it
Kayla Dickey (Lady Thunder King) baseline to baseline, she’s on it and watching her dive after loose balls every tournament gets #THROWBACK hashtag but she also has a nice jumper and knocks it down from outside, can score off the dribble as well but the heat she brings on defense…
Jaydan Davenport (Lady Thunder King) watching her go after the ball wherever it is, gets #THROWBACK because she’s a double-double waiting to happen, and seeing her finish on putbacks against taller players as well as blocking shots galore always makes me smile
Alea Pinai-5’6 G (Phoenix Gold) Vista Ridge HS watching her handle the ball in traffic from afar caught my attention and then the behind the back pass to split defenders several times had me move so see attacks multiple ways to score and see the floor, which also leads to baskets
Chayse Goetz-6’0 F (SA Lady Hoops Gold) NB Canyon HS– she’s always impressed me as a shooter and just watching her set the defender up even better makes her more of a threat because she creates and drops the pull-up yet that “catch and shoot” has evolved
Zaadiyah Stovall-5’11F (SA Lady Hoops Gold) Judson HS-long and athletic is the base but when you add energy, defense, rebounding as well as attacking off the rim, her desire and playing the passing lane just keeps me glued to her on the court ad she ain’t done
Emery Black-5’6 G (SA Lady Hoops Gold) NB Canyon HS-I still remember her in middle school scoring double-digits in about 2 minutes and although she can score, she moves the ball around and gets everyone involved but she has a very high BB-IQ so don’t get it twisted, that jumper or attacking off the dribble can happen at the blink of an eye
