2021 Brook Bowl
I was planning on attending the opening round of area playoffs however I got a text from Westbrook MS head coach Mileka Loydrake and I know that most of you probably don’t know who she is, well she graduated from Clear Springs in 2011 and is one of the best SHOOTERS from the area this century. The thing I loved about her game, except when I coached against her, is that she was poised, under control, and was clutch and although her career was plagued by injuries, she did some damage at the next level finishing at the University of Houston and not only was she a great player, she is an equally great person, so is her family so any chance I get to see them as they continue to support their baby, I love going back to when everything was simpler and so many heads have been clouded by the new era manipulators as well as social media, but what do I know
It would be easier to say what I don’t know, regarding girls basketball and my knowledge just overwhelms me at times as far as evaluating talent and my aptitude for seeing next level potential in elementary school players in unmatched, I haven’t been wrong yet and I had a chance to catch up with a young lady I called Rezia Castillo a #D1Lock in the second grade, let’s see, Dalanna Carter was in the 3rd grade when I said that, Brooke McCarty in the 4th, Rori Hunter in the 5th and Kyndall Hunter in the 6th, just to name a handful, in fact, my own daughter when she was born, the nurse slapped her and she slapped the nurse back so I knew she would have quicks hands, unlike these BLOWHARDS, my stuff is verifiable by using the search bars but here are some of the players that caught my eye
WESTBROOK
Kamryn McLaurin-attacked the rim strong and finished after contact, Battled for rebounds, ran the floor, did a good job defending as well as rebounded well on both ends of the floor
Priya Pillai- poised, plays within herself but her BB-IQ and upside is very good. She saw the floor, made some solid passes, and showed something important, she created her shot
Katelin Seymore-she has a unique advantage to work with, she’s long and athletic, that’s the base and she does things instinctively which is huge. She played the passing lane, attacked rim as well as battled in the paint
Laila Manuel-did a good job attacking the basket and she attacks it strongly, check above picture, yet she also finished after contact, battled for not only rebounds but loose balls and played the passing lane
Galicia Bernard-also showed an knack for taking defenders off the dribble numerous times but she also attacks it hard yet under control. She played good defense, baseline to baseline and in the half court set
Alisa York-size and work ethic stood out immediately and she rebounds, defends and just as important, she finishes. I love her upside because she “gets it” and when you understand the game and understand the game…
Rezia Castillo-so I called her a baby in the 2nd grade, well I also called her a #D1Lock and although I was right about the latter, she “ain’t” no baby. Her body control just blew me away, few middle school players have changed direction “in the air” in front of me but she’s going to be a “nightmare to defend” for numerous reasons. Her first step sets it up, she’s explosive off the dribble, she finishes while defying gravity and she creates her shot, mid to long-range. Her BB-IQ is college-ready, she plays the passing lane and defends
