2020 Select 40 Austin HS Tip Sheet
2021
Kierra Baker-6’0 F (Travis HS)
Baker is long and athletic, active on defense and plays the passing lane well. She has good timing, rebounds well on both ends of the floor and she finishes inside the paint. She also did a good job attacking the basket
Isabella Lopez-5’6 SG (United HS)
Lopez creates her shot under pressure, understands how to create space and drops the midrange consistently but she also can shoot the long ball as well as take defenders off the dribble for baskets
Evelyn Quiroz-5’6 G (United HS)
Quiroz continues to impress me with her offensive mix of finishing acrobatically to the step back three but what she brings to the table comes naturally and she keeps defenders off balance which enables her to get her shot off against anyone
Abby Lebherz-6’1 PF/C (Antonian College Prep School)
Lebherz size and agility and whether it’s using her body to finish in the paint or handling the ball coast to coast under pressure to attacking the rim or just dropping the 3, her mix is very smooth and she rebounds on both ends of the floor
Madelyn Tellez-5’6 G (Dobie HS)
Tellez creates her shot so well under pressure that she is hard to defend because the mid to long range is consistent, she can attack the basket and finish after contact but she also plays within herself and doesn’t force shots. Good ballhandler and sees the floor
Raven Thomas-5’7 SG (Hutto HS)
Thomas immediately showed me range and that continued throughout the event yet what also impressed me was she understood how to set defenders up to attack the basket as well. She has good timing, came up with several blocks and steals
2022
Breanna Davis-5’8 PG (Red Oak HS)
Davis is another one of those MS players I called #D1Lock when I first saw her so no notes are taken on paper, just mentally because I already what she can do I just watch the progression and she can take over a game offensively with the blink of an eye. She has NBA range, she creates while being guarded tightly and elevates for the midrange or explodes to the basket with ease yet she can control the tempo from the 1, see the floor and handle the ball
Aniah Hall-6’2 PF (Temple HS)
Hall has taken her game to another level and gone from a back to the basket decoy to someone that can dominate on the inside as well as face the basket and score. She battles for everything in the paint in true #THROWBACK fashion and is one of the best that does in Texas. She’s strong, college ready body and still hasn’t reached her potential which is scary
Michaela Luera-5’1 G (Eastview HS)
Luera does a good job of creating her shot under pressure, she showed it all day and her pull-up jumper from midrange is smooth and consistent but she also defends and applies pressure baseline tp b baseline
Dezerae De La Garza-5’2 PG (United HS)
De La Garza is exciting to watch as she handles the ball with ease and blast by defenders under control but she also whips pinpoint passes, she sees the floor very well, to her teammates for easy baskets and she can stroke the long ball as well as the midrange or just take defenders off the dribble
Natalie Alderete-5’8 SG (Taylor HS)
Alderete does something I love to see and that is she finds ways to put the ball in the basket. She attack the rim from everywhere and finishes, she battles and outrebounds taller opponents and finishes and she uses her athleticism well on both ends
Kylee Norman-5’5 G (Johnson HS)
Norman is heady and she understands how to not only attack the basket and finish but attack and hit teammates with the pass, off the dribble but her ballhandling and ability to see the floor mixed in with the midrange gave her options
Abby Ordonez-5’9 G (Central Texas Saints Homeschool)
Urdonez has range, very good range and she she can create her shot under pressure which is a big plus because it enables her to attack or take the short jumper. She also sees the floor and can apply pressure on defense
Jamyria Ramsey-5’4 G (Weiss HS)
Ramsey showed her speed “with the ball” going coast to coast and under control yet she always had that but her pinpoint passes on the break are something to see. She can blow by defenders with ease, hit the stop pop jumper or just take it home yet she also has range and her quick release is deadly
Kayla Rivera-5’6 SG (Clarke HS)
Rivera plays within herself, doesn’t force anything and hits the midrange consistently. She showed she could attack and hit the pull-up as well as use the screen to get her shot off but she also rebounds and finishes on put-backs
Sophia Griego-5’9 G
Griego showed me in the one on one drills what was coming and her ability to take defenders off the dribble or create her midrange popped straight out and continued during the games but she also did a good job handling the ball under pressure
Kelsie Hawkins-5’5 PG
Hawkins has speed, with the ball, and her first step can leave defenders cemented to the floor yet she can also drop the long ball. She pushes the ball IN transition, sees the floor in full as well as half court situations and uses her athleticism nicely, including on defense
Kayla Herrera-5’3 PG (Alexander HS)
Herrera also showed me a lot in the one drills and when you can translate that into game situation, like she does, that’s big but using her creativity to hit the midrange or attack over and over was done smoothly and consistently
Sumana Kasarla-5’6 G
Kasarla grabbed my attention at the Alamo City Hoops Combine yet she showed me even more and let me say “a nightmare to defend” because she can take defenders at Will and show no Grace on her pull-up jumper which she can drop from mid to long-range. She also has good timing, comes up with steals galore
Abigail Kileen-5’7 G (Brennan HS)
Killeen is a powerful guard that can attack and finish with contact as well as hit the jumper but she also applies pressure on defense as well as rebounds on both ends of the court as well as “battles for everything”
Angelina Lopez-5’4 PG (United South HS)
Lopez plays the passing lane very well and I love seeing #THROWBACK stuff but she also understands how to create her shot, she can hit the jumper with a hand in her face and she can attack strongly and finish after contact
Mia Salinas-5’4 SG (United South HS)
Salinas is smooth with the ball and just makes plays but she can also shoot it, her midrange was fluid and consistent, nice form but she also handled the ball in transition as well as in the half-court which enabled her to take defenders to the rim
Kylie Sisk-5’9 PG (Onalaska HS)
Sisk was a major bright spot with her HS team in a fall league event I caught yet even brighter at this event. She can create her shot, mid to long range as well as attack and finish strongly but her court vision and ballhandling stood out even more
Bridgette Tello-5’7 SG (United South HS)
Tello told me a lot about her game when she elevated over those around the magic number for rebounds or to shoot the jumper, mid to long range. She attacks very well, has good body control and finishes but she also plays the passing lane and blocks shots, very good timing
Sophia Villalobos-5’8 G (J.B. Alexander HS)
Villalobos is heady, she just gets “it” and she handles the ball and sees the floor, under pressure and she can attack or hit the stop and pop but she creates so much of that with a slight HEZ and can just give herself options. Her mid to long range was very consistent
Mia Mitchell-5’5 PG (Travis HS)
Mitchell is an explosive point guard that sees the floor while going full speed which isn’t easy and not only does she make it look easy, over and over, she understands when to push it and when not to. She can score off the dribble or hit the jumper
Sierra McDermed-5’8 G (Johnson HS)
McDermed is one of those players that fill up the stat sheet in the flow. She understands how to get defenders off-balance, she can hit the mid to long-range and she doesn’t force anything but she thinks the game, another lost art and can defend
2023
Tobi Ademuwagun-5’10 F (Jordan HS)
Ademuwagun has left me speechless while taking me back into yesteryear because she is an absolute BEAST in the paint. She finishes on put-backs, attacks and finishes with either hand, off balance and acrobatically and she can hit the pull-up jumper but her on ball defense as well as inside the paint is special, her effort to grab the ball off the glass is second to none
Mia Alvarado-5’7 G (Monterey HS)
Alvarado mixed it up nicely off the dribble as she could attack and finish or take the pull-up jumper but just watching her create her shot smoothly was impressive, so was her ball-handling and seeing the floor. Good upside !
Aliyah Carter-5’8 G
Carter is one of the most explosive guards in her class, her first step is devastating, I don’t think she realizes how much she brings with just that but then again maybe she does because I feel a breeze when she blows by defenders, her body control is very good as well as her finishing but she can also run a team and watching her dish while pushing is very good, as well as her mid to long range pull-up. Oh yeah, that heat on defense
Miyah Carter-5’10 SF
Carter is long and athletic, caught a little bit of her a month ago and even more her as she just took me away with her gracefulness, the way she reacted and watching her play the passing lane over and over made me smile. So did her midrange, she creates it nicely and can attack the rim but she also rebounds on both ends of the court, very good upside
Jade Clack-6’1 SF (Austin HS)
Clack plays the passing lane, yep, she’s long and athletic and remember “that’s the base” yet her treble is high, she elevates on her jumper, she creates her shot and can attack with vengeance while finishing with contact but she also doesn’t shy from physicality and rebounds on both ends while defending inside or outside of the paint
Kierra Merchant-5’10 G (Spring HS)
Merchant was good the first time I saw her and I said she had #D1 potential, well she’s a lock, long and athletic with a stop and pop that’s one of the best in the state. She takes defenders with ease, she’s smooth and under control, doesn’t force shots yet she also can see the floor as well as handle the ball. I love her poise, her demeanor never changes and let’s not talk about clutch shooting, she’s always ready
Leilani Prado-5’5 G (East Central HS)
Prado was a big surprise, not only because she was heady and played within herself but the fact that she understood how to get hers in the flow and her pull-up jumper, she creates that under pressure, was smooth and accurate
Jacy Reese-5’4 G
Reese has so many ways to come at you offensively, first, she’s athletic and fast, with the ball and she blows by defenders off the dribble, she has a stutter step as well as that “HEZ” in the open court and she finishes with contact, she plays the passing lane, she defends “a hunnid” that’s full-court, wait, I have another sheet, she sees the floor and can shoot the mid to long-range
Aubrey Reid-5’10 G (Austin HS)
Reid is just an offensive machine, first of all college coaches love big guards that can shoot, mid to long range check but her physique and power enable her to post up smaller guards, or bigger players, it doesn’t matter but she also sees the floor and watching her attack off the dribble and finish with contact, not to leave out rebounding on both ends has her good shape
Shanel Reid-5’10 G (Austin HS)
Reid can also face the basket and score and like her sister, she has size and a college ready body which she doesn’t mind using when she battles in the paint for everything. I love watching her finish, she does it smooth and consistent, has good timing on rebounds, on both ends but her defense can set it off with a blink of an eye
Carrah Davis-5’5 G (A.C. Jones HS)
Davis has PWP by her name, passes with power and those pinpoint passes on the money gave her several assists but she also rebounds well, this is off of sheer desire as she does it against taller opponents but she can create off the dribble and finish strongly too
Kendall Griffin-5’6 PG
Griffin is athletic, sees the floor well, and can handle the ball under pressure and when you start combing that, she is a legitimate threat because she can also score off the dribble or hit the jumper from numerous angles
Rebecca Hernandez-5’7 G/F (United South HS)
Hernandez dazzled me with her ballhandling in the skill set, nothing changed during the games as she zig-zagged through the defense and made hard passes look easy which led to baskets. She’s heady and can take defenders off the dribble or hit the jumper
Tyanna Simpson-5’10 F (Killeen HS)
Simpson has been at almost every showcase I’ve covered and to say I have seen progression at each one would be an understatement. She has the physique, she has the skill-set and she has the mindset and has put it together to cause damage scoring, in the paint or facing the basket, as well as rebounding and defending
Taylor Snyder-5’4 G
Snyder is a heady guard, understands how to play within herself, and just gets the job done. She showed could run the one efficiently, was vocal, and handled the ball well along with seeing the floor yet she also created shot well, instinctively
Madison Stivala-5’7 G
Stilava showed she could attack and finish during one on one drills and that didn’t change when the full court games started but what she also showed was a nice pull-up jumper as well as some good ballhandling
2024
Addi McClain-5’11 F/P (Tomball Memorial HS)
McClain has a good body, she’s strong and she finishes after contact but she also understands the importance of positioning and she does a good job under the basket at that. She rebounds on both ends and runs the floor, good size and defends well
Gianna Angiolet-5’8 SG (Westlake HS)
Angiolet name preceded her before I caught her this summer, her shot is smooth and hard to defend because she can shoot it going straight up or off balance and I’m talking mid to long-range but watching her create her shot, especially that stop and pop or taking defenders off the dribble spells trouble
Aniah Alexis-5’11 G (Waller HS)
Alexis was tabbed a #D1Lock by me at her school’s middle school tournament, remember there is no me and she was outscoring the opposing teams but I already know what I’m looking at. She did some college stuff at the event, her body control, her finishing, her catch and shoot all spell #BCS because she’s also “long and athletic” and can handle the ball, plus play the passing lane and mid to long, yes, yes and yes
Alyssa Batton-5’6 G (Hutto HS)
Batton handles the ball in traffic not just in half court but full court as well and her court vision is ahead of her years, not to mention she can “attack and dish” very well. Icing on the cake is the pull-up jumper which combined with her athleticism will make her hard to contain
Kai Camp-5’8 G
Camp was one of the new faces that caught my eye during the skill set, she did well in the one on one so I expected the same during the games, I wasn’t disappointed as she took defenders with either hand and finished strong plus she has nice jumper
Zachara Perkins-6’1 G/F (St Pius X HS)
Perkins upside stood out over the club season but she’s taken to another level. She understands the game and thinks it but she’s also scoring multiple ways, off the dribble or the pull-up, she’s playing the passing lane as well as rebounding but I’m seeing an explosion coming because she wants it
Fia Filoialii-5’9 G (Taylor HS)
Filoialli is a big guard that creates some issues because she’s heady, she sees the floor and can handle the ball but when you can make good decisions with just that, you’re ahead of the game. She can score off the dribble or nail the jumper
Allison Howe-6’0 PF (Smithson Valley HS)
Howe is continuing to show HOW much she’s progressing, after all she stands at the magic number, that’s 6’0, she has good size and mobility, can rebound and finish but her doing things instinctively tells me a lot about what’s coming, her timing for blocks is very nice
Natalie Huff-5’5 PG
Huff can Puff and Blow right by defenders because her first step, at this stage of her career is going to take her a long way. She can not only “attack and finish, she can also hit the stop and pop as well as see the floor and with her ball-handling and body control, she has a lot going on right now
Reagan Jones-5’4 G
Jones also has a nice first step, she can create the jumper or just attack from either side but what she also showed was she can create from the perimeter and the long ball, as well as the midrange are very nice tools. She can handle the ball, she can see the floor and she will add more
