2020 Kenshawnna Reed picks the right fit for her
Back in the day, when it was really AAU, I had a chance to meet several upfront and honest people that I trusted and actually listened to during m,y daughter’s playing days and “the why” but the general consensus among them was that playing what I now call club basketball gave players an opportunity to play against equally or more competitive players where they hopefully would be getting better and having the chance of playing at some level of the next level. Over the years, that mindset has changed somewhat and with help of social media there is no turning back as that look for the biggest and best will leave many with an unsatisfied feeling when things they’ve been promised do not happen that way
I covered an event last season and caught a young lady playing with Nike EAD, this is one of the reasons that swoosh went to the EYBL format to separate themselves from affiliates, just keeping it real but nevertheless I look for talent, not logos because I know talent, as well as the nonsense many believe and go through so one player, was just going completely off, Kenshawnna Reed and what she was doing on the court and this was my assessment “I said 5 or 6 years ago this would be a monster class for Texas and every tournament I’m finding even more. I’ve actually seen Reed but it fits and so did her game as she is simply hard to defend as she has nice artillery of offensive weapons, combined with athleticism and a nice first step”
During this past summer, I caught with another team and had a chance to speak with her about teams that were interested in her and the ones she was actually considering and several D1 schools were interested and I know this for a fact because she has D1 talent and is listed in the PGH Texas Top 100 I put together which is based on my expertise and the fact that I have agenda whatsoever. She told me a couple of months later she had made her decision but wasn’t ready to announce it so when I found out it was Midwestern State, a D2 school, I had to ask her what made her mind up and she said: “I started playing basketball when I was 7 years old and I chose Midwestern because it felt like home and God led me and my heart led me to choose them and I felt like I would make good impact on the team.”
You can’t teach that, you can’t rehearse that and if you’ve ever met this young lady, you would know she speaks from the heart and please don’t let that contagious smile fool you because on the court, she is somewhat a silent assassin who chose the right fit for her
