2014 March Fest Tip Sheet-Sims Division
LASHAAN HIGGS
DUNCANVILLE, Texas-The DFW Elite March Fest continues to be one of the hottest tickets in the state and the vast abundance of talent was just what I needed to try and sort out and give you as much info on talent as possible. I gave you my Girlz Prep Report “Under the Radar” Tip Sheet yesterday and today I’ll break the Sims and Griner divisions down today.
Also I’ll throw in a Monster Class Tip Sheet featuring some of the top 2017 players from the event and with 2018 stars Charli Collier, Madison Williams, Desiree Caldwell and Tatum Veiteinheimer just to start off my BCS team under one roof; I’ll do one on next year’s monster as well. Keep in mind I’ll be doing mini stories from the 50 plus teams I actually saw over the next couple of weeks, well providing I have a roster, but here’s a dozen players to get it going
2015
Lashaan Higgs-5’7 guard-Cy Fair Ogwumike- Higgs was simply amazing. She always handled the ball well however she’s doing it even faster. Whether it’s a crossover or change of pace just to show you don’t stay too close, she scored at ease. Giving her an inch might not be a good idea as her quick release from everywhere was completely. Oh yeah, she set up her teammates up nicely for buckets
Alexandria Gulley-5’7 guard-DFW Elite T Jack- Gulley has returned to the elite status she held prior to her injury and she’s a hard nose player that simply gets it done. Take the right away, no problem as she changed hands in midair numerous times for baskets, not to mention the numerous and one’s she received over the weekend. Another key is she goes just as hard on the other end
Kennedy Leonard-5’6 guard-Cy Fair Ogwumike- Leonard could always do two things, stretch the defense and run a team, this was noticed in her freshman season. She now scores on a vast variety of ways which includes not only athleticism but a touch of the acrobatics. When she’s own, and she was definitely on this weekend, she’s really hard to contain
Kennedy Harris-5’8 guard-Austin Elite- This young lady is a warrior, she is truly a throwback player that runs on solar because she never stops. She’s a great scorer who is equally unselfish and she plays the same way baseline to baseline the whole game. Over the weekend, she truly showed how to get her teammates involved along with vocal support
Erin Degrate-6’4 post-United Elite-Fresh off a state title; Degrate is on a mission this season. Her endurance keeps getting better as well as her ability to finish. She changes shots in the paint and rebounds on both ends of the floor, not to mention running the floor on the break
Zhane Templeton-5’10 guard-Lady Warriors-Wow a big guard that can score and man can she score. Long and athletic, Templeton used her ball handling ability to get wherever she wanted but even more so, that midrange was clicking. Just for fun, she stepped out and showed she could nail the three
Ashley Ford-5’10 guard-Houston Choice– Ford has continued to work on her game and a late growth spurt is putting her in a unique position as a big guard that can score. Her midrange was clicking over the weekend and her ability to get to the basket continues to impress me, well that alone with her reading the floor on defense
Jayla Calhoun-6’1 forward-Cy Fair Jolivette- Calhoun has simply continued to evolve over the years and transformed her game from being back to bucket to being able to face it and score. The midrange is overly consistent, she showed she could nail the three but watching her attack from the wing truly is something to see
2016
Dorian Branch-5’10 guard-DFW Elite Super Girls –The first time I saw her play I asked the ref to hold the ball so I could get a picture of her smiling and she cracked up. Well she’s cracking whatever defenses you throw at her nowadays and the name of the team fits because trying to contain her jumper as she went up, up and away wasn’t working and trying to guard her closely, well let me use The Flash so you’ll get the picture, well blur
Faith Cook- 5’3 guard-AD Elite- Tough as nails on both ends has never been a problem for Cook, nether has ball handling or range; I’m talking mid and long. Her work ethic is second to none, she can truly take over a game offensively and she showed that over the weekend against some heat with grease but she slid right by
Erica Powell-5’4 guard-Triple D- I love a comeback and no one knows how hard it is to get back to where you were after a knee unless you’ve witnessed it up close, as I have which like many other things I’m able to elaborate on in GBB. Powell can run a team and also take over a game offensively but to show how hard she rehabbed, her defense is what really impressed me over the weekend
Lauren Cox-6’4 post-Texas United-Cox continues to amaze me with her having the “IT” factor and she’s the number one player in the country for a number of reasons. I called her Miss Triple Double in high school and on this level the name continues to fit, need I say more. She can shoot the long ball and handle it from one end to another and I’m talking under pressure which at her size sums it up
