2013 Houston PTN Qualifier Tip Sheet
ASHLEY CALDWELL AND CHELSEA GRAY
The Prime Time Nationals Qualifier had countless next level players playing which makes several of my statement hold true over and over again. There is talent throughout the Lone Star State and as good as I think I am at finding it, even I occasionally miss some for various reasons however rest assured if you’re playing in an event I’m covering, I won’t be the only person that knows about you. Most of the players were already on the GPR radar however it’s always good to not only see fresh faces but those who show me something different in other setting or systems. I could have picked 30-40 standouts but I chose 10 and her they are
2014
Quincy Baker-6’1 forward-Blue Steel
Baker handled the ball well under pressure; she rebounded on the both ends of the court, not to mention filled the lanes on the break and showed she could defend against smaller players. The most impressive thing was her ability to hit the midrange
Savannah Fleming-5’9 post-New Caney
I don’t see a lot of area high school teams unless I catch them in tournaments; hey it’s over 200 schools and I’m still the best at covering off the court. Fleming was an unknown gem that I caught on opening night. She uses her body well in the paint which enables her to rebound and finish strong against taller opponents
2015
Megan Worry-6’0 forward-GTE Black
Megan won’t have to Worry about playing at the next level, she’s a legit D1 player that can score on a variety of ways. In one game, she dropped 5 or 6 threes, another game she scored close to 20 without taking a three point attempt and that in itself says it all
Ashley Caldwell 6’0 forward-Houston Insiders Black
Long and athletic, Caldwell showed she could be a force on both ends in the paint. Her length and timing enables her to alter or block shots, not to mention she can explode for rebounds. One thing I love about her is the ability to start a break and beat everyone down for a lay-up ala Hakeem. If she works hard, she just may be UNBEATABLE
2016
Cydney Varner-5’10 forward-Hybrid Hoops
I enjoyed watching this young lady years ago and it appears I’ll have a chance to catch her turn the corner to the next level. She’s relentless as she attacks from every angle and can finish while taking a lick. She also handles the ball well for her size in transition and that pull up looks nice
Courtnie Johnson-5’9 guard/forward-Houston Lady Dominators
Johnson is the next Lady Dominator up and up is what she showed me at the PTN Qualifier. I knew she was good but she showed me a lot more than I knew in this event. I loved the way she sliced to the basket but her body control was even more impressive
Kim Lauritano-5’6 guard-Katy Rebels D’Addieco
Several Rebel players were up but Lauritano simply went off in the Grand Championship. Not only did she handle the ball well under pressure, she got her teammates involved and when that wasn’t an option, she dropped three after three, after three. Solid ball handling and defense is always a plus and this young lady added well
2017
Chelsea Gray-5’10 post/forward-Dynasty
I liked her as a 2016 but when I found out she was yet another in that monster 2017 class, OMG I’m SMH! Gray goes after everything and I mean everything in the paint. She possesses qualities you can’t teach, heart and desire, and when you have the ability to just simply power your way wherever you want at an early age, bright lights are in the vicinity
Alex Sellers-5’4 guard-GTE 2017
When you can shoot it like this young lady can at an age this early, you can cause a lot of damage. During the tournament, she probably had close to 20 threes, but she’s not just a spot up shooter. She can handle it, she can attack and she sees the floor extremely well but to top all of that off, she knows the game
Hannah Froeschl-5’8 guard-IBA Ballers Blue
I always look through the score sheets after opening day of GPR Certified events just to see if anything catches my eye. This young lady put up numbers galore so I had to see her in person. Mind you numbers don’t really mean anything to me but when you have a one, a two, a one, two ,three numerous times, you know a song is about to start and trust me, this young lady will have an album, well MP3. Not only is she going to be a D1 player, her ceiling still hasn’t been reached, trust me on that. She handles herself extremely well on the court and above all is very unselfish
