Klein vs KF

KLEIN COMES OUT OF THE FOREST

One thing I’ve learned over the years is to always expect the unexpected and this year has to be the one where that saying truly holds for Girls Basketball in Houston. At the start of the season, I mentioned several factors would determine who did what and how far they could go. Those factors were injuries, grades and bench play, but it appears I may have left one out, the unpredictables. With Klein Oaks victory of Klein Collins today, District 13 has Dekaney and Klein tied for first place, both 3-0 after Klein's 45-43 victory over Klein Forest. Dekaney was supposed to be here, in fact the district was supposed to come down to them and Klein Collins with three or four other teams fighting for two spots. Throw all of that out of the window because now it appears to be Dekaney and everyone else fighting for three spots. Klein was not supposed to be in the picture at all, however Ashley Alexander is showing no signs of the knee injury she suffered in this very gym last season, and along with the emergence of Maya Malonson, this team has pulled off some big wins of late in district, first blowing out Westfield, then winning on the road against Spring by one and now at Klein Forest by two at the buzzer on a banker by Alexander. The game was all KF early as they led after one 19-5, in fact all five of their starters scored in the opening quarter led by Ebony Parker with 6 and Desiree Davis with 5. Malonson did some damage in the start of the second quarter, scoring the first five points of the quarter  before KF’s Ekiya Gray dropped a three pointer. Malonson finished with 10 points at the half, 8 of those coming in the second quarter, while Gray and Davis both had 7 points for KF and the Eagles were still up 30-21.

The Bearcats turned the tables and held KF to only 5 points in the third quarter, all by Davis and we headed into the home stretch tied at 35. Alexander tied the game at 42 all on a lay-up and then banked the winner home at the buzzer. This was a big win for the Bearcats as they jockey for a playoff spots in what is turning into a very competitive and entertaining district. Davis was high scorer for KF with 13, followed by Gray’s 12 while Malonson led Klein with 13 and Alexander added 9.
