No Fear For New Freshmen

LASHANN HIGGS

When I first became involved in this, the views of freshmen playing varsity were varied to say the least. Most coaches wanted to groom their top frosh by giving them experience together on the freshmen or JV squads. To start a freshman on varsity was simply taboo for over 90 percent of the teams because many times the players who were already there did not accept the youngsters and many were not ready, mentally or physically for the abuse on and off the court, from both opponents and teammates who were jealous of their abilities, I’m just keeping it real because that’s what I do. Nowadays the game has changed and if you’re ready, high school coaches aren’t holding the players back and in more times than not, these young players start off or wind up paying dividends early in their careers. This is going to be a solid class for the area and right now four young ladies have made the jump from middle to high school without skipping a beat.

JORDAN HOSEY

Lashann Higgs caused quite a stir over the summer as she stepped on the court from the Bahamas and left Nike Nationals as being recognized as one of the top guards in the country for her class. This has trickled over to Kinkaid where she stars with Brecca Thomas and has helped them become one of if not the top private school squad in the area. Manvel was going to be good if Jordan Hosey wasn’t coming in from 8th grade however she along with Brianna Turner have transformed their school into a legitimate contender to go to state

ERICA OGWUMIKE

Erica Ogwumike has a name that is well known throughout not only Texas but the country as well. She has also helped fill the offensive void at Cy Woods from last season emerging as one of the leading scorers on the team. Erica, unlike her other three sisters is doing her thing facing the basket and before it’s all said and done, a 6’2 point guard may be in the stars. Woods was a field goal away from the area Final 4 last season and don’t surprised if they make a run. Speaking of point guards and voids being filled, don’t let the size or the smile fool you from this former cheerleader as Adriiana Jackson has stepped on the court, all barely 5’0 of her, and helped North Shore continue to be a tough team to beat. Injuries this season have all but thwarted a chance at a state run however this young lady will be someone to reckon with throughout her career
