The Road To Austin

The stage is about to be set for one of the most exciting State Championships in Austin. What we have are eight teams from four different regions ready to go to battle today to determine who the representatives will be. Campbell Center action from last night on blog

REGION 1

Irving MacArthur was my preseason choice for #1 team in the state. Most of that team played together during the summer and went against some of the top club teams and came out on top. They start and stop with one of the best players I have ever seen in Alexis Jones. Midland is the only team standing in their way.

nneka fluge

REGION 2

District 16 rivals Georgetown and Pflugerville finished 1-2 and will battle once again to see who makes it to state. Georgetown’s Crystal Fortham has already signed with LSU and was named to the MDAA team. They knocked off my R2 preseason pick, “The Taz” and feel they can win it all. “The Fluge” have their eyes on the same prize, especially Texas signee Nneka Enemkpali, and they are looking to make a return trip to the Erwin Center and take care of some unfinished business from two seasons ago.

REGION 3

I have seen some of everything this season from our local teams and since I love coming up with stuff, I call this “the season of surprises”. So many things I didn’t expect happened, however I usually go against the grain. This was great for the sport and it kept me focused. As surprised as I was that Clear Springs beat Hightower, I was more surprised that they lost to Elsik. Cy Falls had been rolling since their only loss to Elsik but got off to a very slow start against Westside in the playoffs and their win against Katy Taylor wasn’t a done deal until the last half of the last quarter. Am I surprised Elsik is here? Yes I am, however they have been to state four times and actually won it once. They also are one of the few area teams that have won it, joining Cy Fair, Westfield and Yates. North Shore has been unbelievable and could conceivably be undefeated. The focus will be on the 2012’s. Courtney Williams and Mo Bedford from “The Shore”, Jasmine Ocanas, Crystal Porter and Akunna Elonu from Elsik. In 1996. North Shore made their first trip to the F4 and ironically played against Elsik

REGION 4

The match-up between San Antonio Wagner and Corpus Christi King should be interesting. I don’t much about King, but they’re here, so that speaks volumes. I do know about Wagner, having seen them up close and personal at the Texas Invitational. Arielle Roberson is simply a beast and at 6’1 can hurt you so many ways. Here’s a twist, they beat Clear Springs and lost to North Shore in that same Texas Invitational, so it’s a good chance their headed to Austin.
