Mayde Creek Upsets Memorial

On the blog, I gave a preview of important Friday games that could mean something heading into the playoffs. Fort Bend Austin lost to Elkins, who is now tied with Hightower for first place. Cy Fair beat Cy Ranch as they head into Tuesday’s match-up against Cy Falls, one game out of first place. Spring surprised Klein in a 13-5A match-up, putting Klein in a tie for second with Klein Forest; both are a game ahead of Klein Collins and Klein Oak, who lost in overtime to district leader Dekaney.19-5A is about to become very interesting as Cinco Ranch knocks of Seven Lakes and in my Friday night game, I watched Memorial lose at home to Mayde Creek in a thriller that leaves Katy Taylor all alone in first place.

Mayde Creek came out roaring with Jazmine Parker showing why she’s known as an offensive threat. Down 8-4, Ellen Anderson led Memorial back to end the first quarter down by one, 11-10. Parker was simply amazing as she made it look very easy and in one sequence, she scored back to back threes and had a steal for a bucket as the lead was stretched to 9. Memorial is feisty and they keep coming back at you. Kelly Wilson teamed up with Anderson to keep the Mustangs close, and then a Laurel Carrell floater cut the lead to 4. The Rams Sheila Onyekwere was a terror under the basket as she and Parker combined for all of their team’s first half points.

Memorial kept fighting behind the offense from Anderson and Wilson and tied the game at 43 which forced a Mayde Creek timeout. When play resumed, Maya Adighbe hit a three pointer followed by a Parker bucket, but Anderson came right back with another three. Down the stretch though Onyekwere was a beast, grabbing rebounds, blocking shots and scoring as the Rams win 57-54. Anderson led the Mustangs with 23 points, including 5 threes. Wilson scored 16, while Carrell added 9. For the Rams, Parker led all scorers with 33, including 5 threes as well; Onyekwere had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Three of Memorial's final four games are on the road as they travel to Katy Taylor, Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes, all playoff contenders. Their remaining home game is against Katy, who they lost to the first time around. The good news is Kirby McDaniel has been cleared and will be ready for action. Mayde Creek also has four games remaining, three of those at home as they host Katy Taylor, Seven Lakes and Morton Ranch. Their only road game is at Katy. Seven Lakes destiny appears to be in their hands as they face three of the four teams ahead of them, two on the road, Katy Taylor and Mayde Creek, while hosting Memorial, along with Morton Ranch.
